Des Preload Error

  1. Oh well two weeks of riding the Multistrada has been a blast !!! Love riding it already . But it now looks like I’ve got the dreaded DES . My question is that I know I will have to spend money on it but how does this affect the bikes handling? ie ( what will the suspension be set at in other driving modes) Or does the setting stay on the previous pre load ? I hope you know what I’m talking about ? Hope you are all enjoying the weather ? It’s been quit clear over on the east coast .

  2. I think most of the time it can be the DES ECU. I’d take this as an opportunity to do a swap test with someone (5min job). If their ECU solves it, go and get yourself the Ohlins Mechatronic ECU and you’ll have had a brilliant upgrade and you’ll be without the DES error :upyeah:

  3. Thread moved

  4. Thanks Jh if I can find anyone close enough willing to do it I’ll give it a try if it saves me a bit of cash . I’m using the bike every day so it would be interesting to know how the problem affects every day riding .

  5. It’ll only mean it’s stuck in its current setting. Other than that, it’ll be fine. Cycling the ignition sometimes clears it and you can pick a different setting.

  6. I changed the mode to urban this morning and the error came up so I stopped and changed it back to touring and then switched the engine off and the light went out . I had a play with it and turned it back to urban and then turned the bike off let’s see what happens.

  7. What year bike is it and can you show a photo of the Actual error screen?

  8. It’s a 2011 AC . I’ll take a pic tomoz and show it ya . Cheers

  9. This is the error that’s coming up AC .

  10. Ok.
Does the rear shock make any noise when you disconnect and reconnect the battery? Wait 60 seconds to let things discharge.
When you next turn on the rear shock will cycle from end to end. Hopefully this will clear the fault.
I purchased a brand new spare (now for sale) and then had to have it serviced after I took it apart to see how they worked.
I saw a label on a screw that said high pressure oil.... so I left that one and went in the other end...... no label.
My office still bares the oil splatter with my body shadow on the wall... cost me £200 for Ohlins to check and refill it, a computer keyboard and a set of clothes.

  11. The DES mechatronic upgrade ECU is awesome and we'll worth the money, cheaper than the Ducati OEM.
You have three electrical connections to the rear shock, preoad, compression and rebound. Check each of these by taking apart. Spray some contact cleaner in.,,, check they haven't corroded.

I actually had a front error once caused by the connection coming apart, but the bike had be bouncing all day on a dyno.

  12. Thanks for that ! I changed over to urban mode before I got of the bike last night and the warning light has disappeared and urban mode is now applied. It seams to have reset itself .

  13. I'd love to see the logic flow against fault diagnostic messages.
Basically from what I can ascertain when first powered up the shock cycles all the servos from end to end to find the Zero and span points (standard for servo design).
I can only assume that either the shock forgets where it is or that it's unable to select the correct number of pulses + or - from it's current to desired position.
Do any of the players on here have more information?

  14. My MY2011 Multistrada 1200 S has now two rear (2010-2011 36520952A) shocks with electronic failure inside hydraulic servo pump tube. I have also Öhlins SCU semiactive 35000-03 update installed.

Both rear shocks do calibrating procedure just fine after reconnecting battery. Preload stays at highest level after calibrating sequency. After that nothing happens: preload setting does not change by setting riding modes and preload settings.

I checked cables and connectors; everything ok there. After that I punch with rubberhead srewdriver to the side of the pump tube: Everything works now! (Edit: only 15 minutes failure was back)

So there is/was something loose or jammed inside servo pump tube...

What kind sensor is used for tracking movement of the hydraulic piston ? Could wrong installation angle of the pump tube could cause this kind of failure when driving bumpy roads?

Has anyone open this "worm can" and fixed it DIY ?

I have studied whole internet and only information is that new 2012 version rear shock 36520953A has been improved and is not affected by this kind of failure. But what has been changed/improved...

  15. I soldered all components on PCB and cables also, nothing special there... I measured from PCB to Ohlins SCU connector: every 5 cables and connections ok. Tested also without magnetic disk: calibration cycle stops in a second so missing pulses are notified just fine by Ohlins SCU. So maybe the problem is dashboard and communication towards Ohlins SCU? Dashboard get all errors from Ohlins SCU just fine but cannot send DES setup changes to CANbus?

  16. Flashed ECU to standard and once again with Tuneboy version. But ignition on without any Öhlins SCU-> shut off-> battery disconnect->reconnect battery->put Öhlins SCU back-> ignition on->everything works. Both preload servosystems works just fine. ????!!!
