Good evening. Before anyone else says it I'm lazy* and I'm also very much a layman when it comes to anything technical/mechanical. Can anyone tell me if the Testastretta in the 998 is the same as in the 1098 (aside from size) and thus subject the same interval for valve clearances (which I think is 15,000miles)? TIA BJB * although I do prefer info from here rather than a Google
998 and 1098 do not have the same testastretta head design. I believe they both however have a valve check interval of 7500miles.
1098 is on the “new” schedules brought in around 2006 where the services were split between mileage and time elements. Valve clearances are 7500 miles. 998 is on the “old” schedules where basically everything got done, bar belts which were 2 years. The mileage markers were 6000 and 12000 miles, whereas 1098 is on 7500 and 15000. Basically, if you follow the correct 998 schedules, it’s expensive every year… unless the bike has well documented history, I’d suggest taking the big hit and from there work with your workshop and apply common sense. I wouldn’t push the valve checks much past 6000 miles, maybe earlier depending upon use.
