999 Diagnostic Suggestions

  1. Hello!

Last year I managed to pop my 999 (06 model) and it has sat unloved in the corner of the garage since.. I can't put it off any longer... so any ideas with diagnostics would be appreciated.

I rode at a fairly pinned throttle in top for about 30 mins (private road of course).

When I went to slow down..no probs until I downshifted at about 30, the bike then coughed and cut out.

The engine is completely locked in both directions, impossible to get any movement at all.

    What I know so far:
    Oil and water levels ok.
The clutch and neutral still work.
The belts are present and correct.
The oil was clean when drained.
    The crankcases are intact.

In fact visual external examination turns up nothing...

I was told that the conrods are the weak link on this model, but i figure this would have been a lot more explosive, and metal would be in the oil. Is the gearbox prone to weakness? - it was using engine braking at the moment of the cough. (Does the 999 have a cartridge gearbox?-here's hoping :))

Any and all suggestions gratefully received!

    Cheers
    Grant

  2. If it isn't simply seized it could be stuck in 2 gears at the same time. In this case you should be able to turn the engine at the crank when the clutch is pulled. If it doesn't turn at the crank with clutch in its a seized. A little look see through the plughole with a £3 android endoscope would also be a good start.

  3. I dropped a valve in a 916 at low speed. Engine was locked up due to valve head wedged in the top of the piston
