Digital speedo going wild

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Wilftop, Dec 2, 2013.

  1. Hi all,

my monster 696 & I have been off the road for the last few months(Sept-Dec) as I have been suffering from kidney stones & infection. I am finally on the mend & took the bike to work today, all fine until the return journey......

speedo goes from 0,75,95,10,35,72 etc even when in neutral, has it serviced while it was off the road but had not ridden it at all since, it's been cold & this was the first time out.

Hoping I won't need a new ECU, any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

  2. Hi Wilftop

Probably a loose electrical connection somewhere. I'm not familiar with Monsters so don't know where the sensor is, maybe the rear wheel?

  3. My 696 speedo sensor packed up a few months ago - for the whole ride home from work one evening, the bike thought it was doing 0 mph and didn't add any miles to the trip counter!

A new one was around £115 from a main dealer - might be worth seeing if a scrapyard has one off an old bike.

My other half fitted it - slightly fiddly but do-able at home, with the aid of a downloaded 696 service manual and quite a few cable ties.

If the speedo is reading random speed figures even when the bike's in neutral going nowhere, try disconnecting the sensor (from memory the plug is connected near the rear brake pivot, tucked away on the back of the swingarm), start the engine, see what's showing on the clocks. If disconnecting the sensor gets rid of the random garbage speed figures, you might need a new one.

  4. Thanks both, I'll give it a go. I did have my rear brake changed so that might explain it.

  5. That's the clue Wilftop-you had your rear brake changed!

How about contacting the people/dealer who did the brake and request they take a look at the problem?

It's probably something straightforward like a snagged cable or loose connection.

  6. Phew, relief it may not be a big problem, the garage that did the bike are good & they'll sort it. I'll give them a call tomorrow & pop in to get it fixed.

    Thanks John & Mrs C!

    Wilftop xx
