SNP backbencher Richard Lyle billed taxpayers £1.80 for takeaway treat as MSPs' expenses topped £12.5m - Daily Record
£1.80 seems high for just chips but low for fish and chips. I'd like a break down of that claim. Perhaps chips and a can of pop? Or was it a deep fried Mars bar?
Anyone whose duties oblige them to travel has to claim travelling expenses. If they have to travel a lot, the travel expenses will be a larger figure. And if the travel claims are published, any journalist can write a piece full of sneering shots about how large (or small) various items of claim happen to be. When I was in the Court Martial system, I repeatedly warned the judges to expect this. The CM judges are the only ones who have to travel often to Germany, Cyprus, etc so if judges' travel claims are published, the Court Martial judges' figures will inevitably be far higher than any of the other judiciary. Some journalist is sure to notice this, and write an idiotic article criticising them for it. There's no way of preventing that, but I advised the judges at least to be very careful to make no errors or over-claims.
For some reason 'When I was in the Court Martial System' evokes images of Uncle Albert's 'During the War...'
