Do you use genuine Visors? or copies?

  1. I have a Arai RX7 GP and want a light smoke visor for it but I am loathed to spend £50 od ponds on one when I can get a copy for half the cost. I already have spent £70 on an iridium blue genuine visor and have a clear, but want something for the autumn weather when the light is not as intense. Sure when you read about all the research and development that goes into the visors from their website it makes sense.............. but does it really? I have never heard or read anywhere that somebodies visor broke due to road debris of a bee. So can I assume that it is only a piece of plastic?

  2. Read Funkyrimpler's experience with Arai copy visors. His was very poor (they didn't fit).

Yes, Arai replacement visors are a rip-off (a tear-off?) but then so is an Arai helmet, really (I should know. I have one). You've already bought into getting ripped off, so now I fear you just have to bite the bullet.

Talking of tear-offs, I was thinking when out for a ride yesterday that if someone could invent biodegradable optically sound tear-offs, they'd make a fortune. Imagine just ripping them off and hurling them into a hedge without stopping. On a long summer's ride it would be superb (and even better in the UK where it seems service station forecourts hardly ever have any water buckets for washing windscreens/visors and where villages don't often have water troughs and fountains.

This is something that should live on the "needs to be invented" thread.

  3. Thanks. Enough said then. Genuine version going to be bought.:upyeah:

  4. Balls to cheap visors. Its not worth the hassle and you dont know if they will sustain a fast moving object like flying debris / pebbles.

Id stick with whats tried and tested and original visors. Your eyes are kind of important.

    Buy cheap, pay twice.

    :upyeah:

  5. phew..

i just landed on this thread..thanks to all for linking to my post.

    Advice..Dont do it.

    Ps..
Does anyone want a left hand side pod for an Edwards valencia RX7???

  6. Was the Valencia Red/Black or Yellow/Black?

  7. Don't worry I'm home and searched for images, I need a left hand for my Laguna Seca Edwards rep :upyeah: I suppose I'd better bend over and pay £30 for them.

  8. yep.

  9. There's no need to spend all that dosh buddy, but if you've already bought an RX7 it sounds like you've been sucked into the vortex
I'll use a pattern visor ,as long as it keeps the flies out of my teeth
Been riding on the road 42 years and back then there wasn't even a kitemark on visors
And I don't know anyone thats had an eye injury apart from a bit of sand or whatever,(me,twice,no goggles or visor at all!)
Imo,this whole safety kit addiction is a marketing mans dream, that only became an industry since motorcycling became a lifestyle choice
Check out all those foreign bike cops....no leathers, shirtsleeves, sunglasses, and a no-name lid...
£45 for a visor?...I've bought bikes with MOT for less....
(not written with any intent to offend, just my opinion...(and I do have an Arai myself...mint,unworn Doohan-rep Astro R,bought it Friday for £50 from my accountant)

  10. Just to add, I will NEVER buy another Arai. Finish is gone to sh1t the last few yrs, they're heavy and visor mechanism is gone out with the donosaurs.

HJC / Suomy or Shark ( but up the range, not starter or midrange ).

  11. I use HJC helmets, got HQ1 carbon and the ben spies rep rpha, and love em, used to be a devote Shoei werarer, i have used racevisors from Guernsey several times, always good value, and quick postage

  12. I am luck enough to travel with my work to Hong Kong, I visit an Arai race shop over there and pay £20-20 for genuine Arai black & yellow race visors. I think I will bring a bunch of them back if folk are happy to pay £40+! (declaring them at customer of course lol)

  13. If you read my thread you'll know that it was a non gen visor that fkd my rx7, thats the only reason why i say dont risk it.
£45 is a rip off, i quite agree..i have nothing against no gen visors..but if i bought another one, i'd want to fit it before buying..trouble is theyre all online purchases and im not prepared to risk it again..

As you all probably know, im not a fan boy of ANY brand. Period. I wouldnt sing the praises of Arai for any other reason than theyve been great lids for me, with the few that Ive owned.

Ive never owned a Shoei because my head isnt Shoei shaped..i wish it was, as i think they make much more stylish lids with a comparable safety record.

As for Suomy, ive heard that they are Arai shells (?) but unlike Arai they don not make a unique shell for each size, but stuff it with more padding..dont know if thats true but thats what i was told by the bloke in the shop many moons ago.

The RX7 is a very light lid compared to the others in the range. if i found a different brand that offered the same levels of safety and comfort id have no problem purchasing that lid. Weight is critical to me since i fractured my neck.

For instance you'd never get me anywhere near a caberg..i tried one once..fkn great big heavy thing and it tried to take off abouve 100mph..i felt like fkn frank sidebottom..great big fkn huge monstrosity..like those bloody Shark lids Foggy used to wear...looked like fkn Bod.

Buy what you feel happy wearing. Wear what you feel happy buying..

  14. I'm in the market for a new visor for my Suomy lid. Has anyone bought an aftermarket, and if so where from?

Plenty on eBay (Bob Heath?) but not sure if they are worth the money, should I just go for a £60 genuine one?

    Thanks.

  15. I always thought that Bob Heath had an excellent reputation. They've been around for donkeys years. But what do I know.
