Folks, Whilst I appreciate that I'm likely to have previously asked this question before, I can't, for the life of me find the damn thread. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to go in the Bristol/Somerset area, to get this service carried-out at a reasonable price? I usually go to Riders Bridgwater to get my bike serviced, however, as they are highly likely to quote me well over £1200 for this 'service', I would prefer to find another reliably skilled outfit to take my bike to, if I can save some money........
Same problem here in Buckinghamshire. Being quoted £1,300 inc VAT for the 18,000 Desmo service for a 1260 PP by my local dealer. My bike is only just due its annual service and has only done 16,500 so I can wait a while. Asked a highly recommended independent MC repair shop and they said that, although they had an ex-Ducati fully trained mechanic who could do the Desmo, only Ducati dealers / service points can afford the equipment to carry it (the Desmo service) out so they couldn't help. Would also welcome suggestions.
Luigi Moto rebuilt my 748 including the engine. That bike was brand new after, not only is he great, but whilst he had my bike I ran into some serious financial problems and it took a few months to pay him back, so not only is he a magical mechanic, but also a great person. Highly recommend.
Spoke to them. Sound like they really know their stuff and do it right .... generally the same price though. The argument is that to do it properly is a complex job - rads off to change spark plugs, tank off, belt covers off, head cover possibly off, and timing of valves checked / set, fluids and filters all changed etc etc
Doesn’t matter who does the work (so long as it is done properly), it still takes the same amount of time and it’s a long job. Any significant potential saving by using a non franchised workshop will be the difference in the labour rate, if there is any difference. Some authorised workshops reduce their labour rate over the winter months if the workshop is quiet but by all accounts, not all. I’m also aware that after an early V4 was destroyed by fire in the US, dealers were advised to decline customers’ requests to use components and materials not supplied through the dealership. Again, some do and some don’t, so you might get a small saving if the dealer lets you supply some of the consumables. Andy
Tony, CMW at Chichester did my 1200 DVT 36k desmo service 08/21. They were a Ducati dealer (I bought my 2013 twin spark new from them) up until about 2015/2016 but didn't want to spend the large amount required to upgrade to Ducati corporate standards. They still have their Ducati trained head mechanic. The service cost me £890 as opposed to Snells estimate of £1100/£1200. I supplied the spark plugs as they warned me they had to charge a lot more to supply them, and they have the kit to reset the service light, on a 1200 at least. I'm taking my bike there on Friday for an MOT and new brake pads. Give them a call if they are in range for you on 01243 782544
Someone has already mentioned winter servicing, workshop prices are generally lower and if you can strip as much off as possible that will save you an hour or two's labour in the overall cost also.
Are you happy to do the more simpler tasks? .....and just leave the valve checks and re shimming ....maybe the belt change if necessary to the specialist.? If so and if Louigi is up for it you could remove the bodywork......coolant rad .....tank etc etc and get it to him in a van or trailer ?
Cheers Uncle Peter, Helpful as ever and I trust you are doing well. It would be great to catch-up with you and a few others in 2023, so keep in touch and we can make a time, etc.... TonyN
Thanks for all of the other suggestions guys, as helpful as ever and with Luigi Moto being relatively close to me, I'll try them first.
