1200 DVT Dropped It Today ...

  1. Had a little bit of an accident with the Mutley today :sleepy:

It had warmed up, and although it rained earlier, this afternoon was sunny and the roads were starting to dry out when I realised that I needed fuel.

I stopped to fill the tank, and didn't notice that the ground by the pump was covered with a mixture of water and diesel. When I swang my right leg over the bike to dismount, standing on just the ball of my left foot, my boot moved.

In one of those slow motion moments that I am sure I will dream about, my foot slipped and I was off balance as the bike fell over towards me. I managed to get my right foot on the ground but by then it was past the point of no return and the most I was able to do was to try to lower the Mutley to the ground. Which ultimately left me sort of sitting on the ground looking foolish with my left foot pinned under the bike. Eventually a couple of motorists came to my rescue and helped me to get out, after which I was able to get it upright and onto its stand.

It took me a a little while to process what had just happened and to figure our that the slimy ground surface was the culprit.

Fortunately the only damage is a broken L/H knuckle guard. The indicator still works. The mirror fairing panels etc are all fine. So it could have been worse. I felt like a real plonker though.

Another lesson in the art of riding motorbikes!

  4. Bummer. My favourite trick is taking the bike off paddock stand and dropping it straight on the floor because I have neglected to put sidestand down.

  5. I wouldn't normally suggest this but if there was a Derv spillage which wasn't previously or properly dealt with at the service station which may have contributed to this incident, I would have a conversation with them. Most will have CCTV due to Bilking and other issues which may help you.

  6. You're not the 1st! Did the same a few years back with mine, but I had failed to put the side stand out, clipped the Ortlieb bag on the back seat with my right boot and down she went, in a packed Llandudno Shell station!

Did the guard/indicator and some tank paint. Now I always leave in gear, stand down and have Barkbusters fitted. Went over last year (a different scenario) and no damage :)

  7. I have to admit, I don't normally put the side stand out, as I'm intending to use the centre stand. Had I done so here I wouldn't have had this problem. That is the real learning point from this exercise. :-/

  8. Its a good point, and if the damage was greater I might be tempted, but the replacement bit is costing £60 on eBay, so its not really worth the hassle. But the key lesson is to always put the side stand out before I get off.

  9. Thats a real shame, to be honest you could have done yourself a nasty injury with type of accident. Doing the splits is not run, I know, tendons can snap!!

  10. If it's any consolation , I dropped brand new fireblade as left disk lock in. On a BMW gs I've rocked it off centre stand and got wedged against petrol pump and lastly did a u turn on road covered in liquid mud with pillion and feet down and still slipped and ended up on my arse! My view is if you walk away and can smile it's a result ! Take care chris

  11. Well done for sharing first off. It may sound weird but there are lots of biker e-heros who never admit faults or mess up moments like this. I always watch the side stand touch the ground, before dismounting. And I've managed to do the same,...damage a handguard & lay the bike down slowly as it was too much weight moving bike about. Forecourts are nightmares for spilled fuel, live & learn & share experiences!

  12. Its a real problem not only as has happened to you but I have found my foot slip off the foot peg when leaving the fuel station and I take care for a while as the tires are covered in it also.

  13. Fucked a front disc riding off forgetting a disc lock was on, another time, foot slipped on the center stand as it was going up and did the same slow fall of death which two very old ladies helped me get the bike up and dropped a mates brand new cx 500 eurosport when he came round to show it off.

I still would have a word with the store manager, if nothing else it might encourage them to clean the floors a bit more regularly, Might even get a voucher for some free fuel?

  15. As I've previously stated on here - if we are honest most of us have done exact same thing and nearly always in a petrol station! I did it last year on my 1979 GS 1000 Cafe Racer when I pulled away with the side stand down and the year before I pulled into a different garage on one of my very heavy Chops, thought I had put side stand down and climbed off! I just didn't have the strength to hold onto the beast so over it went - took 2 other fairly big guys plus myself to lift it - all very very embarrassing but surprisingly little damage

  16. The main issue arriving at an unlit field was when the bike went over on me, one ankle was scissored inbetween the bike's weight & side-stand. If I was alone I'd of been in super trouble although I did scream for help like a big girls blouse. It was because I could already feel the blood flow stopping!

  17. What a shitter

  18. Borrowed my mates GS to go to the North West 200 a few years ago, misses on the back, full luggage load, she dithered about getting off at the first fuel stop, half on half off, I just couldn't hold it any longer and ended up lowering it to the ground on the engine bars.
We were on the floor pissing ourselves, everyone on the forecourt just pretended not top see us, we still laugh about it now and again.
We've all done something similar at some point !

  19. Almost finished with 4500 mile trip on loaded tiger 800. Pulled into rest stop, pavement wet from rain. Bike was pointing downhill a bit so I dog paddle backwards. Wife pulls in behind me and of course taps my rear tire with her front. Down I went. She had the rest of a car sized spot to use.

  20. mine was at 2015 TT parked up at the raven pub at balaugh bridge, thought i had put my side stand out and fully forward, turns out i didn't, come to swing my leg over the bike. Next thing i know the bike is falling towards me, luckily hovering around 15 stone i managed to stop the initial fall, but just couldn't stop it all as by that time it was well over at an angle.... so tried to lay it down as gently as i could, only damaged caused was a snapped clutch lever end, but only the end so i could still ride it fine

there was a couple of guys at the pub outside who came over to help me lift it up.... i wanted the ground to swallow me up there and then but one of them said "don't worry mate your not the first and wont be the last", now i kick my stand forward religiously, i just didn't do it 100% and paid the price :smirk:
