1200 Drove Away Without The Key!

  1. Ok I put my hands up,yesterday in the heavy rain while refuelling I decided to put my bike, garage, house and car keys into my rukka inside pocket, but I missed without realising ,only unzipping the inner lining.got on my bike and rode off. Luckily I decided to leave the bike running as I looked for the garage key, then it dawned on me what had happened! Luckily the petrol station was only 3 miles down the road, and someone had found the keys on the ground and given the them to the cashier,Lucky so and so or what! Lesson learned but I bet I'm not the last person it will happen too, I was lucky it was near home etc, what if you filled up 100 miles away!

  2. One of the magazines' reviewers did exactly that-pulled up at filling station, left key in rucksack after filling up, left sack on ground and rode off to the overnight stop umpteen miles away. He only found out after he'd shut down. Fortunately, he had colleagues to go back and collect it!
Makes sense to get a fuel cap key cut, and leave the electronic key safely stowed.

  3. When moving mine comes up with a warning on the dash 'key missing' even when its in the seat lock

  4. Well there is plan B, which is the PIN number to start the ignition without a key. You have set the PIN, haven't you?

  5. Doesn't matter if you have run out of fuel ;)

  6. Yes the sign no key came up,but I thought maybe as it was inside pocket etc that was the reason, and yes PIN number has been set up.

  7. Everyone got key cover? Lost the keys to my van one Friday night just after loading all my tools into it. Van was unlocked on clients drive and keys where somewhere onsite..maybe. Got card for key cover out and rang the 24hr emergency call out number, Turns out although they man the phones 24hrs they couldn't send anyone till Monday!!!
Unload tools back into just handed over house (much to the new owners delight!) and get taxi... Luckily (sorta) a workmate had accidently picked em up and I was able to pic van up sat.
I'd still go with the cover though as £30.00 quid a year covers locks and house locks for any keys attached up to £1000.00 Won't sort an after market alarm though, only decommission it.

  8. I am trying to get a key cut, but no joy in finding someone who can get the blanks, Blanks with out a chip inside? someone have a contact please? Prefer East Sussex :)

  9. How far can you go without a key?

  10. till you run out of petrol, you can start bike with out a key, if you know pin, but you cannot open fuel cap :)

  11. Think I may fit a race cap to mine...

  12. Blimey it hadn't crossed my mind, I'm not going to try it out (hopefully).

  13. Madproff, I bought my key from P&H at crawley.

I got it cut at a place in holborn, central London. Timpsons would not do it, and neither would any of the key places in Guildford.

if you buy a cheap one off of eBay, be careful as they are made of cheap Metal.

  14. Race cap or electronic cap is a good idea, but if the electronic cap fails, you will need to strip it down to get fuel into the bike (not a super easy job in a petrol forecourt) and the race cap comes with the (slight) risk of fuel tampering?

Why they couldn't have fitted an ignition barrel to put a bloody key into, I will never know?

  15. or check your possession for key when you see the warning on the display before you run out of fuel .... simples

  16. or you can just keep an Allen key in the lil storage box on the right hand fairing just unscrew the cap with it.

  17. Why would you need to use your garage, house and car keys when refuelling the bike?

  18. I fitted a race filler cap from USA. Slight worry on fuel tamper, but outweighed by keeping key safely hidden in jacket. Note I've left the key several times in the seat lock when accessing storage, so a non-chip bthen cut blank seems a good idea.

  19. MadProff,

  20. I'm getting a new simple blank cut for just refuelling. The main key I've ordered a CNC surround that will both protect it some and allow me to hang it from a lanyard. This whole keyless idea would be OK if the key wasn't a big lump I then have to carry around. If it was a tiny transponder it would be different, or a RFiD credit card. I wish I'd gone for keyless fuel now as it would be easier, I thought it was a daft option but keyless fuel with the pin would mean no issues if the key is lost. I might fit a neat race fuel cap as I rarely leave the bike any place I'd worry about tampering but in the meantime, the spare key will suffice.

I can see a future tech where you simply have some smartphone app that acts as your wallet and keys for the bike and is all you need to carry, much easier. If anyone starts whinging about "what if it all breaks down, doom gloom, carry a full toolkit and a lump hammer etc." then look at cars where this is already starting to happen and the tech works. A friend has a BMW with an app on his iPhone that starts the car, defrosts and he's good to go in the morning. If he has a meeting, he sends it to the car and the satnav knows where to direct him. It's simple to use and the next gen MTS should have a full colour screen with integrated satnav judging by the latest spy shots I have.
