1200 "dtc Off" Error (and No Abs)

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by tzoykas, Nov 4, 2015.

  1. Hello all

I was doing some work on the bike (light related, I installed new LED bulbs) and now it has lost ABS and DTC. The ABS warning light is constantly on and "DTC OFF" is displayed on the LCD screen. I have not disconnected the battery or done anything else that would "reset" the bike. I just removed the original bulbs and installed the LED ones. However, I mingled with the wiring quite a lot because the guy who assembled the bike thought it was a good idea to give reverse polarity to the plug on one side (the yellow wire is going to the "ground" pin). For those of you that have done some work with the lights, it will be perfectly clear that space is very limited and the wiring from the bike is very short. In trying to get the pins out to switch them around, I did a lot of pulling and stretching (and eventually failed as I couldn't find a way to remove them). I also removed the plastic plate cover that shields the wiring between the forks from water coming up from the front wheel, in order to try and house the small ballasts in there. So my question is, have I severed or disconnected a plug/wire in the process? I don't really believe in coincidences, so I think I might have just done that. Is there any ABS related wiring in the area?

    Thanks in advance

  2. If you don't get ABS nor traction control but the speedo sill works the fault lies with the front ABS sensor, if the speedo doesn't work it's the rear one that's faulty.
The connector for the front ABS sensor is mounted to the bottom yoke just above the plastic shield. The odds are that you have disturbed the wires to/from it. Make user the connector is fully together.
On my bike I had a problem with the front ABS sensor that turned out to be a broken wire in the loom pigtail that runs to the ABS connector. And mine isn't the only bike this has happened to, the wire can be routed really tight so that it gets stretched at full lock. I posted on the forum about and you'll find it if you do a search.

  3. Thanks Derek.

It's the first case (the speedo works fine). Is it the connector you can see on the right side (just above the plastic plate), when seating on the bike? The one that you can even visually tell that stretches on full lock? 'Cause I definitely disturbed that one. I'll give it a shot and let you know!

  4. Yes, that's the one.

  5. I fiddled this morning a bit with the connector before setting off and the warning is gone. The problem is that there was no obvious damage to the wiring, nor the plug was disconnected. At least now I know that it's the loom somehow. I'll need to reroute the wiring.

    Thanks again.

  6. Now that is what a forum is all about ! Brilliant Derek

  7. Good to know that you've got to the root of the problem and the ABS/DTC has been restored. If it happens again carefully check the loom pigtail. One of the 2 wires in mine had broken where it is cable-tied to the connector.

  8. I was very cautious not to do any full lock movements with the steering today. I'll have to unplug everything and check the wiring and then change the orientation of the whole assembly to prevent this from happening again (and be able to use full lock without fear of breaking something). But it's a pain to work there ...

  9. Mine went exactly the same way, same place. The break is behind the sleeving on the cable, so you need to slit the sleeving to see it.

    It´s gone, all right ....

  11. Hmm. That's a bugger, right at the exit from the connector. Doesn't leave you much wire to solder to to mend it. The connector isn't available from Ducati, only a complete loom!
The connectors should be available online somewhere if we can identify what they are and it should be possible to dismantle them. So you may be able to get new pins and re-assemble the connector with them after extending the loom pigtail. I have a spare sensor with the mating half of the connector. I'll have a look at it in the morning and see if I can get any clues.

  12. Deeply appreciated Derek but it won't be necessary ;)
You already gave me all the help that I needed. The pins in this plug are relatively easy to get out (I am living a nightmare with the lights plug :p)

  13. That's nice and cheap Chris even if you have to buy 10 of them but the cost of having to buy a 100 contacts as well rockets the price up. Do RS also not have a minimum order charge?
I used to deal with RS at work and they were great for getting all sorts of connectors and stuff but now that I'm retired I no longer have that access. Farnell too but they have a £20 min order charge. CPC their retail side are quite good but don't have as big a range of components.

  14. You can buy the terminals on their own from Polevolt
