Ducati 125 Bronco - How To Separate Stanchion From Lower?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Hotblack Desiato, Sep 2, 2015.

  1. I am trying to get my Ducati 125 Bronco forks apart so I can re-chrome the stanchions. Like a lot of old forks they have a screw on 4 inch aluminium collar that holds the oil and dust seal in place. With this unscrewed I'm left with a stanchion and a lower leg. The lower leg has no external bolts or screws in it that might hold the stanchion in the lower. When I pull the stanchion upwards quickly it hits a dead stop with a metallic clunk. I'm thinking either there is an interference fit something or other in there stopping the stanchion coming out that I can't for the life of me see.

Any classic fork experts out there who can tell me how to part the stanchion from the lower please?

  3. Hey Yungstog, I managed to get my forks apart although I think I will end up selling them rather than rechroming them and going for another solution on my project instead. But, basically, when you unscrew the 3-4 inch collar that gives access to the oil seal, you are left with an external thread at the top of the lower leg. That thread is actually the top half of another threaded collar screwed into the lower leg. If you clean up the base of this external thread you should see the join. I put a bit of plus gas on the join to soak in for an hour and then used a boa constrictor grip tool to unscrew it with no damage to the threads. It then all comes apart no problem. Let me know if you want me to post pictures of this or whether you are happy to have a go.....
