  1. Hi all,

    I purchased a 400ss project recently...

Currently im working through the (growing) list of jobs, but i cant wait to get it finished and ride it in spring!

Will no doubt be posting to ask for help, advice, and maybe parts if needed.

The biggest issue so-far is the tank, which is super-rusty inside. but im treating it with every chemical known to man, and its slowly working... patio cleaner was particularly good - but vinegar and bicarbonate of soda works slowly...

Looks like all airbox and fuel hoses have perished... so im on the look-out for them...

    Seat is being recovered currently...

Next bigger jobs are the belts and carb-clean...

May need new exhausts, as the carbon has split on one... :-( Duc LR.jpg

Excuse the state of the garage, i was in the middle of tidying when i bought the 400SS!

  2. If you heat the vinegar, say with an aquarium heater, it will work a lot better. :upyeah:

  5. A warm welcome to you and good luck with your project.
Has the rust eaten through the tank?

  7. Good idea.

  8. Nooooo….stoppppppp….please….before you get all the way through the steel and reach the paint!
So, patio cleaner typically is dilute hydrochloric acid that will pull existing rust off so looks effective but actually promotes rapid surface rusting that is then difficult to stop.
Sodium bicarb and vinegar is a fizzy parlour trick that looks good but actually just makes water in the end, so, in summary, you have removed any rust protection from the steel, then filled it with water.

  9. What about Evaporust?
