Ducati 748 Wont Start? Flat Battery

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by alexlex85, May 19, 2014.

  1. Just before i have bought the bike, the owner put a brand new battery on it
After i bump start the bike , i dont have any problem while riding it. After i leave it for few hours, the engine wont turn over.(all i get is clicking)
I have done 230 miles in 24 hours and the battery should have been fully charged by now. Is it a common problem?
The bike is a 2002 with 13k miles on the clocks.
    Thanks in advance
    Alex

  2. I would think the battery is knackered, if the bike wasnt charging it would stop within 40 miles with a flat battery. Check all battery leads have clean connections and have the battery checked.

  3. Also worth checking voltage at the battery when running in case it is overcharging which could have killed the new battery.

  4. as above plus check for draining while bike left turned off as you may have something draining it* - if you suspect this is the case then can easily be ruled out between runs by disconnecting. Did you get a recent receipt for the battery in with the bills when you bought it?

*popular culprit is an aged Datatool alarm

  5. Must say my simple initial suspicion was-is the new battery the one actually fitted, seller may had said so, but buyer beware etc.

  6. I do have the receipt and i reckon the seller fitted in the hope of fixing the problem.
I have read about the 3yellow wires behind the battery that could burn. I have disconnected the plug to see if it makes a difference but it still does the clicking noise without turning over.

  7. Does it start with a fully charged battery? If not check and clean all the battery leads, if it still clicks it could be the solenoid, you can check this by shorting across the contacts with a heavy screwdriver, be firm as it might spark a bit.

  8. While its charged it does start.
I have checked the battery terminals and are ok. Sorry to be so dumb(first bike) but which solenoid do i need to short? Starter motor?

  9. If it starts with a full battery forget the solenoid, i still think you need to have the battery checked. Even a new battery can be faulty.

  10. As Chris has stated charge the battery and leave it disconnected over night and then see if it holds its charge and starts the bike, if it does then you have something draining it while connected.

  11. I will give that a go and report back
    Thank you!

  12. I dont have the charger on yet. After 2 days of not using it and attempted start, the battery reading is 9.48V

  13. Thats much to low, disconect it from the bike, charge it up and leave overnight disconected from the charger and see if it holds charge.

  14. That's a useless battery, if it was fully charged 2 days ago and has not been connected to anything. On the other hand, if you have not yet tried fully charging it (then measure voltage which should be 13V+ I think), then leaving it disconnected for a day before connecting up and trying to start, then there could be a problem with the bike draining it when left.

I've just replaced the 6-yr old one in my 900SS, after finding that it could not turn the engine over more than a few times (without enough vigour to start it). Even in that state it showed more than 12 volts when disconnected. I can recommend a supplier called Tenya, who advertise on eBay as well as having their own website - they shipped me a new Yuasa, complete with separate bottles of acid, delivered next day, for £39 which was the lowest price I could find.

  15. I bump started it today, took it for a long run(1hour)
While running its showing 13v. If i turn it off and try to start it up again it wouldnt. After i try to start it it shows me 8v?

Now i just need to see if it starts with the leads connected so i can at least know that the starter works.

I have a feeling that this battery needs replacing or the rectifier

  16. Have you done what we have suggested in the previous posts ?
    Still looks like your battery.

  17. Ive charged it the whole night.
    On charge its showing 13+V
After disconnecting it for 1 min it dropped to 11.4V.
However the battery was connected on the bike.
I am going to buy a new battery and go from there.

  18. It is not the voltage of a battery that actually turns it over it is the cranking amps it puts out. My battery when perfect only reads 11.6 volts after standing and with no alarm or other drain but it still has enough amps in it to turn the bike over.

Clearly if you have a very low voltage showing then there will not be enough amps to turn the engine over and the battery will be no good.

It sounds like your battery is actually spent and a new one might be the answer. To start any bike or car you need enough power to not only turn the engine over quick enough but to fire the plugs with a decent spark as well. I have had bike batteries showing a good strong 12 volts, and even using an optimate it has indicated it as being perfectly good, yet it does not have enough amps to start the bike.

If the battery is badly sulphated it is never going to recover, there is also the possibility that it has overcharged and boiled and is internally damaged.

Get a drop test done on the battery if you are in doubt or you can do it yourself with a meter. If it drops then it's the battery and if you buy a new one then you need to check the charging rate after that.

  19. If you have a "Battery Shop" nearby they will test it for free.
