Ducati 848 - Clutch (i Think) Problem

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Ferny848, Aug 23, 2024.

  1. HI everyone I have been trying to find the solution to my issue and was hoping that someone might have seen this in their Ducati lives.

I had a low speed low slide, bike was scratched up but nothing too bad. Once in the pit bike would not find N so would not start. Got the bike home and was able to trouble shoot some different things. I pulled the clutch lever, all was well. I could use the clutch pedal and get the bike in N and start it right up.

I have since replaced the clutch lever BUT once I put the bike in any gear and pull in the clutch lever, the rear wheel will not spin freely and needs a little force to spin. Also, when bike is started, if I put it in first the bike will stall and turn off. I have flushed the clutch fluid 3x and checked the clutch slave and that looks good.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - or anything to trouble shoot

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Which side was the slide on? Assuming left ?

  3. Yes left side - clutch side

  4. The clutch is on the R/H side. If it fell on the left, maybe you damaged the clutch master?
Also check the micro switch on the master to make sure it’s still located properly.

  5. It was this I'm thinking

  6. Actually slave cylinder was what I was thinking

  7. Agreed on slave cylinder.

if undamaged would suggest a bleed since a new clutch has been fitted?

  8. If your sidestand has a microswitch, dont forget to raise it before you snick it into gear. This has caught me out a couple of times. Once i rebuilt the clutch before I realised. Doh! I know this is a silly obvious thing, but you'd be surprised how many of us have probably fallen for it. Also dont forget to bleed the clutch master as well as the slave. Another thing some of us forget about....

  9. Thank you all for your responses. Some updates:

I have bled the line at the master and the slave.

I pulled the slave as I have had previous issues there with an O ring. All parts look like they are good (rod, the plastic clip) Is there something that I should be looking for to make sure it is working as it should.

Master - I am not sure what to look for here. I have bled there and when pulling lever I feel pressure.

I as well thought it could be the micro switch as it was slightly bent. I have bent it back and when pulling lever I hear the “click” Is there a way to check this ?

Stand was also a thought but from testing in N stand down then up the up in gear etc I do not think its that but happy if anyone has a suggestion to test.

    Thank you all again.

  10. I've probably run out of ideas mate, but wanted to ask if the bike has a QS fitted?

  11. Yes it does

  12. Others may be able to provide more detail but my understanding is that 848/1*98 does don't like them.

I removed mine from my 1098 as I got a lot of the same symptoms you mention (neutral hard to find/engage, jumping gears, feeling like it's in gear when releasing clutch with neutral light on etc).

I haven't missed it at all.

I also changed my clutch fluid recently and I had to bring the lever back to the bar to get the cutch to engage and even then, the lightest release of the lever pressure and I felt the bike wanting to pull away. I opened the bleed nipple at the Master and gave the lever a pump and it resolved the issue.

None of this may help, but you never know!

  13. Thank you I will definitely try it !

  14. As @bigjimmyb, I had similar issues with my 1198 (no quick-shifter). I found I had to bleed the clutch hydraulics at the master and slave cylinder ends, and quite often at that. IIRC there was a bleed nipple on both cylinders.

  15. Yes, nipples on both Master and Slave

  16. Agreed - bled at both ends. Used a mighty vac type machine - made sure no air (hopefully)

  17. Any improvement?

What's the lever like now and how is gear selection behaving?

  18. Still the same. Does anyone have a way to test if the slave or master are or are not working ?
