Hi guys, this could end up being a silly question, but i'm a little worried. My 848 has been with me in Spain since the first day I got her and its always hot over there. Never saw any flames coming out the back of her or smoke for that matter, regardless of how hard i rode it. For the past week I have started her up in my garage twice and flames have torn out that back of the Termi slip-ons like madness! Then it smokes like a spent gun... Is this normal? The mapping etc. was done by Ducati Glasgow so is it just old fuel I'm dealing with here or...? thanks
have you done a proper ride since bringing it back from Spain? it might need a run to get used to the uk climate, air sensors etc thinking your in a nice dry climate??? I used to love people reactions when I had a 4 door Sierra Cosworth, it was running close to 400bhp, and used to spit fire quite often, loved it
Clearly, its not burning that fuel in the relevant cylinder when it should. So its either A: not sparking when it should or B: that combustion is not contained within the cylinder. My sons 749 suffered very similar and the affected cylinders valve clearances were such that the burn was not contained . Thus still burning on the way out of the exhuast. C: Too much fuel
I haven't noticed a glowing red because i didn't look into the pipes :/ might do that today. I warmed her up let her idle for over 5 minutes then i revved her for my cousin slowly not anything crazy and he yelled over the exhaust like something was wrong so i looked back and he went back like 2 feet saying there are flames coming out - so i revved again to see for myself and the flames were mental so i cut the bike and the pipes smoked for quite a while...
No the longest ride I did was maybe 5-6 miles the other day but i had to turn back because of the bad weather. Roads in Northumberland are muddy, full of ice and wet so when i lost the backend a couple of times in a few short minutes of riding I decided to turn around to avoid a bad day...
Strikes me that if you've got flames coming out of both exhausts, that should eliminate some of the potential causes. Not sure which ones, but it's a start. (I mean, it's not going to be a problem with any one cylinder). So it's something that affects them both, like electric or fuel system.
you did right to cut your journey short Markus, I hit some black ice 2 days ago and was lucky to stay upright. If you get flames immediately then it has to be unburnt fuel but most times it's due to running lean possibly at idle rather than top end. Your main concern is risking damage to Termis and engine in general here so you need to run it as little as possible until you find what's wrong. If you start it and just let it idle* is temp gauge showing a quicker warm up than normal for winter? Don't rev it at all and check for exhaust cans glowing internally (but not too close obviously) and shut off at the first sign of overheating. *flames only come on revving engine i'm guessing?
I'm no mechanic and I'm sure you've checked, but are you absolutely sure ? Had a backfire on my 1198, then rode to Carlisle. Exactly the same symptoms as you describe. JHP (Ducati Coventry) knew immediately what had happened ('cos it's not uncommon). Tank off an there ya go...airbox popped off the intakes.
I wouldmnt be letting your bike warm up for 5 mins.... I let it tick over for only 2 mins then ride off ( gently until its at running temp & 10/15 mins before i ride it hard ).
Has the bike been standing unused for some time? I put one of my bikes back into use today and got the same effect. It had been standing for a couple of months and the fuel has deterioprated. Empty your tank (put the old stuff in your car) and refil.
