For Sale Ducati 851 Complete Engine

  1. The engine has not run in a long while (c. 20 years). It was fitted to a 888 bike as the owner was rebuilding the 888 engine. I bought the bike and now fitting the correct 888 engine in it, so this engine is going spare.

I know very little about the engine and I have not started it as it will need a complete service to do so. I have done some basic inspection of it and pulled all the cams. I can report that all the rockers feel smooth - no flacking- and the cams are good (A1 cams). The intake ports look like they have been blueprinted. Engine turns OK but I have no means of inspecting the bottom end.

Buyer has to assume a complete service of this engine to recommission it. It would be a great base for a project or to restore an 851.

    Looking for c. £1,500 ono

Collection preferred from Redhill, Surrey, United Kingdom. I could look to meet some way nearer to you if you were to travel from far. Engine is available now.

  2. Hi there,

Any idea on mileage and year?

    Many thanks,

  3. I am afraid - I do not know. The 888 SP4 has 29,871 km - and most of it was covered with the 888 engine until the owner cracked the cases. He then temporarily put an 851 engine in it.

He told me that he did not do much mileage with the 851 engine, and the bike had been sitting unused since about 2003 (I have some German-like MOT records up to 2002). But I am assuming that the 851 engine was not new when he used it as a temporary measure. So difficult to know how much the engine had on it before use. I have checked the top end, and it all looks pretty clean (pictures above). Unfortunately, that's as much as I know. I have not attempted to start the engine as it needs a complete check and service before doing that.

I am attaching a picture of the engine number if it can give you any indication of the year of the bike.
Stamps on the heads are 1990 - please see pictures as well.

I guess those engines are getting quite rare and looking at the prices of parts on redfox-grinta, a set of heads is over €2000. I would rebuild the engine but I have my hands full with two 888 SP engines as it is and that's plenty enough for my bandwidth.

If you are local to Surrey, you are most welcome to come and check it. I am in Redhill
