Ducati 916 Not Starting - Fuel Pump Not Priming?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Jefr0, Jan 11, 2015.

  1. Hi all

Yesterday I transferred over my road fairings from the track fairings that were on there including tank etc.

I went to start it today and it's not working. With the ignition on, the lights work, horn works but when I push the starter nothing at all, no noise or anything.

When I turn the key there is no noise of the fuel pump starting either.

I'm not sure where to start with this.

The fuel pump in the tank has been sitting about 6 months or so but looking in from the fuel cap shows it looks ok and not rusty.

    Any ideas?

It's for a Ducati 916 '95 Biposto. It has no side stand switch.

  2. When did you last start it?
Check the little relays under/beneath the battery....well known for giving up.
    Have you lifted the tank?
Check the electrical connections underneath...did you disconnect the tank?

  3. first is the kill switch on...

have you knocked the fuel pump relay somehow disconnecting it....

another might be the side stand switch wiring

  4. What would affect both the pump and starter....?

  5. Never overlook a combination of more than one problem if the bike has been standing. It happened to me once, battery suddenly went faulty and at the same time the fuel pump fuse in the loom blew. It can happen so it is best to trace through every potential possibility, however rare the chances\possibilities might be.

I spent a few hours tracking down each individual but coincidental fault on my bike.

  6. ecu fuse/relay

  7. I started it only a couple of weeks ago. It's happened in the past but then has just been fine without me doing anything.

I'll check the relays underneath the battery. Yes I swapped tanks over and the electrical connection is on. Kill switch was my first check so it's not that.

I've never had the side stand switch, it was never fitted with one.

Where do I find the fuel pump fuse? Same with ECU fuse/relay?

    Thanks for your replies!

  8. there should still be wires for the side stand switch down to a block connector. If the side stand switch is removed then there is a wire loop that needs to be fitted connecting the original wiring....or a posh block connector...

  9. Oh right, learnt something new today, I thought mine just must have been a old model without the switch.

I'll have to check it out, thanks.

  10. 916 don't have a side stand switch, no wiring for it either - flip-up stand.

Check the underseat relays but also the fuses and the wiring to the fuses - the wiring on my fuel pump fuse melted along with the fuse holder.

  11. There should be a fuse for the fuel pump under the seat, worth checking the main relay connections, the big relay to the side of the battery.

  12. Got to be a wanky connector somewhere.Boring task of checking them all I suppose.Could be a sticky relay.

  13. 95 bike would be on a flip up stand so never had the side stand switch.... No starter and no pump could be kill switch/rhs switch gear..

  14. Nelly was spot on! I thought before I try any fuses/relays I'd try a bit of WD40 in the switchgear.

    Started straight away :Smug:

    Thanks for your help all.

  15. I like a cheap fix!Maybe worth, while youve got bugger all to do,cleaning/lubing all the connectors.
