For Sale Ducati 916 (troy Bayliss) 1987 15k Miles

Discussion in 'Ducati Bikes For Sale' started by Peter Whitmore, Oct 7, 2022.

  1. I have for sale my friends 916 which I have recently cosmetically refurbished. He has owned the bike since May 2008 but never used it. It sat, pretty much on display, in his house from that time until early this year when he asked me to refurbish it. THe MOT certificate for March 2009 shows 15656 miles. The current mileage is: 15686.

It was made to look like a Troy Bayliss special with fairings depicting the Troy Bayliss WSC bike and Marchesini 5 spoke wheels. Whilst not damaged, apart from the nose and screen, all fairings have been replaced by the more conventional ones, but still retaining the Troy Bayliss theme. The original Fairings are for sale if required.

    Other modifications include:
    • Ohlins Suspension
    • Top Yoke
    • Brake Discs & Calipers (AP)
    • Brake and clutch levers (ISR)
    • Exhauss (Arrow)
    • Lots of carbon fibre pieces
    • There may be other things that I am not aware of not being a Ducati owner

During my refurb I replaced the Kush drive, bought new mirrors (from France)
cleaned and serviced the chain and did a general tidy up.

The bike was then sent of a full service, including belt change and an MOT which it passed with no advisories.

Because of the upgrades to this bike it is difficult to determine a price. I am happy to talk to anyone who is interested in this bike, you will probably know more about Ducati's than I do, but for the sake of establishing some sort of guide price, which is only that a guide, let's say £14500. Happy to consider offers in consultation with the owner.

I have a great deal of documentation including past MOT's, services and several Ducati factory original manuals. The bike is Datatool registered and has a SPYball alarm system, but I am not sure that works at the moment. It has a unique registration number of R916 CNE, which is also included in the sale.

    Please get in touch with me, Peter if you need to know more or would like to come and view the bike. . 20220829_115329.jpg 20220829_115338.jpg 20220829_115347.jpg 20220829_115438.jpg 20220829_115444.jpg 20220829_131824.jpg 20220829_131803.jpg 20220829_131712.jpg 20220829_131655.jpg 20220829_115512.jpg 20220829_115447.jpg 20220829_115444.jpg 20220829_115438.jpg 20220829_115347.jpg

  2. It's got some amazing stuff on it but your mate is better of reverting the bike to as close to standard as possible and selling the mods separatley

Might also want to check with him the 1987 thing

It's not a 14.5k bike sadly and the market is pants. There's people here that have paid 10k for 996 sps and even less for things like a 1994 916 S for example

  3. Thanks for the reply. Your are right, it was first registered in 1998. My bad. as for reverting it, no way, he just wants to liquidate his assets.

  4. If he just wants rid it’s a £5k bike not £15k. Got some lovely kit on it mind, ohlins etc

One for @Expat Jack to work his magic on.

  5. Where did you get £15k from?

  6. As he said, a punt in the dark through absence of any idea. Fair enough tactic so long as you are prepared for the teeth sucking and derision :joy: Andy

  7. Look at other 916's advertised, looked at the mileage and thought £15. Its only to gauge what the market is. I am open to any reasonable/sensible offers. If someone is after a low mileage 916. Here it is!

  9. the way i would price this is that i would knock off 25-40% from a standard bike with similar mileage and then whatever the replacement costs are for age appropriate parts is to get it to a close to standard condition. theres so much that needs to be bought to revert this to standard (assuming it can be bought). the parts removed will have a deep discount applied to their market value

one this is done you're looking at a number that is less than one third of your ask

problem is you/the vendor risk losing any credibility as a serious seller if you are not able to establish a sensible starting point for the value

unfortunately i fear you may have already done this and your reply above would be a red flag to anyone seriously in the market. the waters get muddier when you say you are selling for someone else but you then speak as though you are the vendor

you might be getting a commission on sale which is fine but better to be upfront if that is the case. if not, then might also be worth getting that out there too

  10. Agree with the view of reverting to standard as far as possible but even then £15k is dreaming. My '98 916 with 4500 miles is bog standard and realistically I would be lookjng for around £8k due to it's condition and mileage (it's not for sale) but ultimately the prospective buyers will dictate the price. Photos in my album if you want to look.

  11. I'd be surprised if my 1997 sps made £15k at the moment.

  12. This bike has uprated suspension, aftermarket exhaust, levers, calipers, footpegs and iron discs, a different fairing and there is no way those indicators are standard. This makes me suspicious it's spent a while on a track, which makes me think hidden damage, which makes me think $$$ fixing things.

It's also not very clean and has signs of obvious corrosion to almost every metal part pictured and most worrying the frame welds.

It's to expensive to be a track bike and it would take thousands more to get it close to a stock clean bike.

  13. What's the point of paying that much and leaving all the frame and engine rusting and flaking?

Maybe some previous owner just liked trick parts but maybe there is another reason they decided to put them on and don't have the originals anymore.

Either way it's at the end of the pricing scale where I could get something much closer to concourse for the money or save both time and money and pickup one of those perfectly average examples on ebay for 8-9k

I won't be competing with your generous offer. :)

  14. That’s true. If he’ll take 5k maybe. If he won’t, it’s no longer a cheap doerupper

And tbf it’s closer to a Baylis era bike than a V2 :joy::joy:

  15. I kind of like the look of this bike, from a distance

    Some nice upgrades

But, some hideous cheap looking tat too

Nor liking the price though, it would need to be around half of that price to tempt me to buy it

  16. Maybe just leave this as a 'for sale' post.

  17. I think we are coming to the same point from different angles. Yes if I was the seller I would return it to close to standard and sell it seperately from the parts to maximise value.

Looking at this as a buyer if sold as is there is little motivation. It's not a great example, I have suspicions about it's history and if those parts don't realise the value then I'm out of pocket.

  18. Have deleted some of the posts as it's a for sale thread

  20. Thank you to all for your mainly constructive 'advice'. I am just the middleman here seeking to help me friend sell his GENUINE bike. My idea of advertising on this forum was to achieve exactly what it has done, i.e. given me a sense of perspective and retail value that I can now pass onto my friend. At the end of the day it's his decision not mine as to what he wants to do with it.
