ducati 998 no spark

  1. can anyone help ,,please, have a 998 ducati that wont start was running fine when i put on a new battery, then would not turn over, then tried to jump start it and alas the leads touched together and now it wont go:mad: at my wits end

  2. So does it turn over now? What's the battery voltage?

All your fuses OK? WHat about connections? Have you looked at the alternator connector? Starter solenoid?

  3. I hope for your sake you haven't fried the ecu. Was there a spark when the leads touched followed by a nasty buring smell?

  4. Oops, dont like the sound of that, jumping Ducatis can very often lead to mucho tears. Hope a fuse has gone because as Archer says a fried ECU is possible.

  5. thanks for getting back so quickly ,checked all the fuses, the bike is turning over okay, and as i am a novice dont know were to start, its a new battery that is in it,is the fuse box the only fuses on the bike?

  6. not sure about the burning smell as i never put my head near it. was at the car when i was about to put the jump leads on then the leads came together and sparked ,at my wits end and a novice with bikes ,could pull my hair out

  7. can i check the ecu in any way to see if i have fried it ?

  8. So just to get a clear picture, you had the jump leads attached to the bike, and we're about to put them on the car when they shorted? Therefore shorting the bike circuitry? Possible reg/rectifier problem?

  9. I'd have thought it would still start just not charge though??

  10. Is there not a thread somewhere on here which has a link to download wiring diagrams?

  11. yes thats exactly what happened with the leads,so would that shorten the circuit ? and what steps would i take to sort the problem ?

  12. Look in technical help free workshop manuals (2nd option) might be able to download a wiring diagram to aid you.

  13. how do i get technical help to download the wiring diagram, also i am not sure in how to read the diagram ets,do you think it could be the regulator,or rectifier

  14. Check all fuses in the main row under the tank
Check the two under the seat, they run the ECU
There's also one by the battery that does the charging system
Do the simple things first then worry about ECU's etc later IF you need to

Detail the symptoms clearly - what DOES it do, what DOESN'T it do
    Don't flap, be factual
    :upyeah:

  15. i only thought there was only 1 set of fuses and they were below the tank.thank you very much much i will check them in the morning when its light, keep my fingers crossed

  16. Not sure about the 998 but it's the same motor as 999 so it probably has a 40amp fuse located around the battery box/holder.

  17. would my lights etc work if it was the fuse at the battery ?

  18. The one under the seat is in a black rubber block holder thing...Looks different to the other fuse holder.

  19. would that fuse under the seat also cause it not to spark

  20. ITE, there should be a circuit diagram pasted to the inside back cover of your operators manual (if you have it). There are three other fuses on the bike, a large 40A one which is located down by the starter solenoid on the same side as the battery, it has a hard plastic cover. The other two are located under the seat on the right hand side inside small rubber covers. One of those is a 5A fuse which is on the feed to the ecu, the other is a 15A one which is on the feed to the fuel pump, coils and some sensors. Both those fusese are on the main feed which goes through the big 40A. If you switch on the bike and there is no whirring noise from the fuel pump the 15A one is blown. Also when you changed the battery did you connect up any small black earth wires close to the battery to the battery negative post? Finally if you have an alarm fitted there may be a small aftermarket fuse on the main alarm supply lead which is usually located close to the fuse box under the tank but can be anywhere between the battery and the alarm box.
