EDIT: Poll data lost in forum 'crash' 05/2012 There is a possibility that if I (we!) can pull together enough information and show that there would be enough interest (sales potential) that HexCode, makers of the superb GS-911 BMW motorcycle diagnostics/service tool (for the uninitiated....take a look here!;-) would consider the production of a similar tool/device for Ducati motorcycles I've had first hand experience of how good/useful the GS-911 is and know that there would be demand from Ducati owners for a DU-911 (see what I did there? lol)......so.... ONE Who would be interested (price/features dependant of course)? (POLL;-) TWO - potential market (and see THREE) I've got some stats for UK sales of the MTS1200 and Diaval... 1676 MTS1200 UK registration to end of Q3 2011 Search results for "ducati multistrada 1200" - How Many Left? 444 Diaval UK registrations to end of Q3 2011 Search results for "ducati diaval" - How Many Left? Total 2120 .......reasonable to estimate a conservative worldwide sales figure of at least 21000 bikes to date?! NB Anyone know of a source for worldwide sales figures? THREE I'm guessing the electronic control systems / control units (various ECUs) of the MTS12 and Diaval are much the same (probably the Panigale as well?) But what other commonality is there with other Ducati models? Do they all have the same diagnostics/service/comms 'port' that Dealers plug their computer systems in to? What other 'electronic' features do they share e.g. 'Service Reminders' and Fault Codes? FOUR What features would you most want? e.g. # clear service reminders # check and/or clear fault codes .....lets not let the list get too long right now, just the priority / the most useful/used features that would appeal to the most people. I expect that, just like the GS-911, any tool for Ducatis would have firmware/software updates with time to add more and more features but start life with a relatively simple feature set. R&D and so availability would be quicker ;-) FIVE Independent Ducati service shops & Parts/Accessories retailers Would you be interested in being a retailer/distributor for the DU-911 should it come about? SIX Mechanics / Engineers / Technician / Electronics specialists If you have relevant knowledge / experience would you be willing to share information with HexCode? SEVEN My technical expertise and knowledge of 'market research' is limited........what have I forgotten / what else should be considered? Thanks
Thanks, yes.......very limited use/functionality, light years away from the GS-911 type of tool, but hey it's free. TBH I wouldn't even try it with my MTS12, no idea of compatibility, lack of any easily found detailed info....just a French forum. Stephan (HexCode) had a look....
Instructions here, in english. ducatidiag :: Connexion Software is free, you just need the cable. There is also a map editor (free) and a writer (€100) to flash an edited map onto an ECU. Mike
Thanks Mike DucatiDiag is interesting for sure although I'm yet to confirm that it's compatible with the latest Ducati ECU's (MTS1200, Diaval.....[Mitsubishi ECU]). And whilst DucatiDiag may be useful (great for a free app!) the purpose of this thread is to discuss the possibilities of a device that will give access to all electronic control units (ECU's for ABS, DTC, Ohlins Electronic Suspension etc) as well as the engine management systems. I've done a bit of digging around, there are some other devices/software out there.... :: RexXer ECU-Tuning :: REXXER - looks a good bit of kit and does have some limited diagnostic/service capabilities but primarily for loading/saving engine management maps Home :: TechnoResearch Inc VDST software from Technoresearch, low cost but limited use. They do also make some impressive hardware but it's aimed at the pro workshop judging by the prices (Mitsubishi ECU support is coming soon I'm told) Not sure what's possible even but one thought I've had is the possibility of plugging a laptop into a 'DU-911' and being able to view and change suspension, ABS, DTC settings etc etc within a user friendly interface. Every time the battery is disconnected on the MTS12 ALL custom settings are lost, the lot! and the defaults set....even speedo calibration (reverts to kmph), temp reading displays etc are affected.....default for DTC is OFF! Being able to save and reload personal settings would be ideal but the capability to list and print settings at least would be a great benefit. I think the demand from owners for systems that enable the engine management ECU to be flashed with new maps and/or fuelling/ignition maps to be tweaked will be far less than the demand for a system (like the GS-911) that gives full access to all electronic systems for diagnostics and servicing and is aimed fair and square at all bike owners rather than more specifically at 'techheads' and pro workshops. Of course a device that did the lot would be a bonus.
I would have thought that a basic system could cover maintenance/servicing/fault diag, then extra modules could cover ECU/tuning. Being able to carry out a quick reload of preferred settings would remove the oft repeated questions on how to select using up/down cancel switches as they are not the most user friendly devices.
Sorry for the lack of updates! A service / diagnostics tool has been in development for some time now (last update I have was end of August) and as things stand at the moment should be on the market before the end of the year. I don't know the cost right now but expect it to be around us$250 to us$300 - not a small sum to spend but it's capabilities will be extensive! ;-) Not surprisingly development has taken some considerable time not least because of all the microcontrollers for suspension, ABS and traction control etc on the MTS1200 and Diavel and the launch of the Panigale threw a spanner in the works as the aim now apparently is for the same tool to be compatible with the MTS1200, Diaval and Panigale. The DTC, ESA and all those electronic controls are the same for both MTS1200 and Diavel but not the same on the 1199 Panigale I'm told, making the integration of the systems difficult and so setting back the release of the tool a little. I will update as soon as I know more.
Won't TuneECU do a lot of those functions? I understand it will even reset the service indicator with a free licence. The software is also free.
No...."TuneECU is a software tool for the reprogramming, diagnosis and testing of the Engine Control Unit (ECU) fitted to Electronic Fuel Injected (EFI) Triumph, KTM, Aprilia & Benelli motorcycles."
The new diagnostic/service tool is past the bench test stage with real bike testing is in progress. Testing on DP ECUs for the MTS1200 and Diavel is also under way. If 1199 ECU is not too different in programing, then the tool will be able to take care of it too. Looks like a January launch once the DP ECU is worked out but only for Diavel and MTS1200 up to 2012. Once I have a more definitve date for the launch I will post an update. For the newer, 2013 MTS1200 with SkyHook suspension, it will be at least a year, as per "gentleman's" agreement between factory and the manufacturer for the tool to be able to check the suspension, but, the rest of the regular functions should be the same.
Hi Andy - this thread is a bit out of date, but I'd be very interested as well... Please keep us posted and let me know if I can help chase down info, etc. thanks, desmodab
