  1. Ok, so this SS1000DS has an ECU that does everything.
The start button isn't, just an ECU start request.
So, why the hell does it have a manual choke?

  2. Just because. That's all you need to know.

  3. It's not a choke it's a cold start lever. Just holds the revs higher for cold starts. I have one on my 999 and have never used it.

  4. Ok, 1/2 a choke then :)

Same argument though, the ECU should handle that.

This DS needs it through, so presumably it is mapped leaner.

  5. I don't think the ECU on some models is that clever, I've got a 2004 ST3 and have to use the cold start lever - although it starts without it - just needs to be opened a bit so it ticks over until the engine is warm.

  6. It's there to give the rider something to use, to give more interaction with the bike. There's no reason why the electronics can't do what the lever does...

  7. The later bikes have an electric idle control valve that is controlled by the ECU. The same IAW5AM ECU as fitted after 2004. I would much prefer a manual idle adjust on my 1198 as the ICV's have been known to fail.

  8. My '03 has a 5AM fitted, so presumably it has been changed at some point.

So is there an advantage of having a 5AM rather than a 5M?

  9. If you've got an IAW5AM and not a IAW59M fitted to a 2003 bike then that would suggest an ECU change.

With the 5AM later bikes eventually got Lambdas, Idle Control Valves, DTC & DQS capability (depending on how the ECU was configured). And they weren't as prone to coil driver failures.

I too have a 2003 bike running an IAW5AM ECU which, hopefully, should keep me running for years to come.

  10. My only problem with the 5AM is that apparently the immobiliser cannot be disabled in it :(
    Unless anybody knows differently?

  11. The IAW5AM can have the immo disabled or be virginised. Sorry, can't do the latter on people

  12. I was quoted £25+post for a 5M.

What's it cost to do, how quick and is there anyone near York who can?

If it's just a lead and software that I could get then I'd be looking to get it in the near future as a matter or course :)
