V4 Ducati Official Tank Pad

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by tifosi256, Aug 11, 2022.

  1. Has anybody had the official Ducati tank pad fitted to their V4 MTS? I've just had the dealer do it and I'm not entirely happy with it. As you can see from the link below, there seems to be some weird adhesive outline, which looks pretty untidy, behind each pad section.

Is it supposed to be like this or has the dealer done something wrong?

  2. Mine was the same. Can’t say I’m too impressed either.

A bit of white spirit on a cloth has got most of it off.

The rest seems to be drying up and falling off.

Careful with the cloth, the paint on these bikes seems very soft.

  3. yeah, that looks pants... it will catch dust and polish and stick out like a sore thumb. You could try taking a blade and cutting it clean, but would need to watch lacquer underneath obviously

  4. Yes, I’ve got it on mine. You can see some of the adhesive, but it’s nowhere near as bad as that. I saw a PP at WDW, which had red vinyl film in exactly the same shape instead, which looked pretty cool, and would do the same job. If I manage to find it, I’m going to swap to that.

  5. Thanks so much for the rapid responses all. In some ways I'm relived it's not the dealer who messed up. Just can't fathom how Ducati thought that would be ok.

I think what I'll do is leave it to weather in a bit, and hopefully it will dry and fall off like @gc6269 says. If not, I'll eventually try white spirit.

And yes, the paint on these bikes is super soft. I think I've already caused a touch of damage somewhere on the tank just from trying to pick off a bit of dirt with my fingernail (which are well and truly bitten so not very long or sharp at all). Wondering whether it's too late for PPF...

  6. yep got it on my PP and agree, think it looks shit. i tried to tuck overlap area under the actual pad pretty unsuccessfully so will probably take it off sometime soon. and you're right, god knows how they thought it was up to standard on a 25k bike......and it cost something like £60FFS

  7. I had the PPF fitted at the dealer before i took delivery of the bike. The V4S i had for a few weeks for the IOM TT had the pads fitted and i agree the adhesive looks kack all round the pads!!!

  8. white spirit ?? <shudder> use some Tar and glue remover you rough arses !:p

  9. I've got Autoglym tar remover, is that the sort of thing you mean?

  10. yes, you still need to be careful but far far better than White Spirit :upyeah:
use a microfibre cloth and gentley does it, if you start getting loads of paint on the cloth, stop ( a bit is ok)

  11. I’ve actually got some in the garage. I’ll try it on what’s left.

  12. Success!!

I just used a microfibre cloth, tiny bit of tar remover but not sure that did too much actually. I then held down the edge of the pad I was working on, and put a bit of pressure with the cloth on the SIDE of the pad (ie not on the tank) and started rubbing along the edge of the pad. This causes the adhesive to roll up into a ball.

My advice is not to try and make lots of small balls, roll the ball of adhesive as far along the edge as you can as it'll grab a bit more adhesive than you can reach.

I've now done all 3 pieces and they are looking good :upyeah:

Shouldn't have to do it in the first place though

  13. I used my finger rather than a cloth to rub along the side of the pad, glue rolled up quite easily and left a tidy finish.

  14. Do they need trimming before fitting?

  15. Because the dealer did it all, I never got to see how it came out of the packet, but it's certainly something I'd be checking out if I were doing it myself

  16. If white spirit takes your paint off then you have far bigger problems than the glue residue, thinners will take the paint off but white spirit would be fine. I use it all the time (I’m a painter). :)

  17. Well each to their own but WS WILL strip any paint protection/wax from your paint work, it also should really be washed off after if you are going to use it
My point is that there are far better products out there to do the job in question without damaging any of the paintwork system
It’s a bit like using washing up liquid to wash it….it does the job (kinda) but there are much better products out there :upyeah::D

  18. Yes white spirit will strip the wax and polish off but then so will tar and glue remover/ sticky stuff remover. Just clean it down afterwards and reapply the wax or polish .
