Ducati performance slipper clutch

  1. Ive got a ducati performance slipper clutch on my 1198s.is ok to leave the maintenance to it between services?i only ride on the road.is it easy enough to strip down and what tools are needed.??

  2. anything is easy if you know what you are doing......

you will need a clutch basket holiding tool if you want to undo the hub and grease the ramps bearings..........if they are ok or you dont want to go that far, you can undo the 6 springs and remove the pressure plate then you can check the height of the plate stack. this is crucial to get the best out of the slipper. the last plate should be 4-5mm below the inner drum measured with a vernier.....you change this height by utilising the thicker thinner plates to get the desired measurement.
If you are going to remove all the plates make a note of the make up of the stack (including any spring plates) as if you put it back wrong it will not function correctly and may jam up particularly if you start with the wrong plate!

  3. I strip and service the slipper clutch after every race weekend or track day as any build up of powder from the friction material mixed with the grease on the ramp and rollers are only going to accelerate wear. For a road bike perhapse not so often but deffinatly sooner than each service. It is an easy job with a clutch holding tool and a long bar/large socket for the centre nut.

    Have fun.

  4. Tell me about it. My 1098s had a slipper fitted by the dealer when I bought it. The 1st time I changed down at speed I got a false neutral which nearly sent me through a hedge. Upon stripping the clutch, the dealer had fitted a steel plate into the clutch basket 1st, this slipped behind the centre hub when it opened up on the ramps. Just for good measure he also fitted a friction plate last in the basket which destroyed the clutch pack (as it filled it full of debris) and my pressure plate.

He then had the front to try and tell me a clutch was a consumable item and didn't want to replace the clutch pack or pressure plate. He was quickly re-calibrated on that issue !

Luckily my local dealer knows his stuff and I've never had any problems.
