Ducati St4s Starting Issue

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by HARTY52, Jul 2, 2016.

  1. High Harty52 from Cornwall , I have recently purchased a 2001 ducati st4s . I'm having problems starting the bike , it would appear that I need to make 2 attempts for the bike to fire up hot or cold.
Not sure if any members have expierenced the same issue . would be greatfull for any feed back.
The bike is stunning and great to ride , I'm off to France next week .

  2. Welcome Harty :)

  3. My old ST4S needed a specific routine to start. No fast idle, do not touch throttle, press starter button. Bike fire into life, add fast idle to increase idle, allow to warm up.

  4. Starting routine for Ducatis is important.
However, over time, the already marginal starting circuit builds up resistance to the point where there is insufficient current left over for the ignition circuit.
The cure is to replace the starting circuit cables with higher rated ones, which will have much reduced resistance.
Team the new cables up with an AGM battery, which has very high cranking current and your starting should be transformed - mine certainly was.
If you are a highly skilled electrical type, you can make up your own cables. If you are fairly skilled you can use some Halford's cables.
If you are like me and only mildly skilled with electrics, you are in luck because @Exige who said hello a few replies back, actually produces made up kits complete with instructions.
Best ask him if he has a kit for your bike.
A cable kit was the best money I've spent on my 999 :)

If you check out my fairly recent Ebay feedback you will see a recent glowing review from a purchaser of an ST4 Kit too.

  7. many thanks for your replies and guidance , hopefully this will fix the issue of keep having to turn off the ignition and attempting to restart the bike hot or cold .
