Ducati Up And Down Shifter.

  1. Hi there. Am very enjoying my Monster 1200S and getting used to it and mostly enjoying the shifter, but wondered on how people use theirs to get the smoothest gear changes as it's quite different to others I've used. I tend to "clutch it" from first to second and wondered if others do this, or qs all changes on way up. Tend to want at least 4k revs for a smooth change and also kind of continue rolling on the gas as you change up, rather than a momentary pause? Contrary to dealer view I find 4 to 5 and 5 to 6 very smooth also. Coming down the box, what do people do - close throttle, brake (a bit) and then down shift, or close throttle and straight on the down change?
    Hope ok / makes sense?!.
    Cheers,
    Andrew.

  2. All quickshifters work best with open throttle on up shifts. Partially closing the throttle will typically make the change worse. Higher revs also are smoother. Low revs tends to be bad. No need to touch the brakes on down shifts, you may find a sweet spot on a closed, or very nearly closed throttle on downshifts. A little experimentation is sometimes required on downshifts until you know the bike, inline fours, Ducati twins and BM boxers are all a bit different.

  3. Cheers for this. Out of interest do you qs 1 to 2 also? And no need to close throttle on down shifts? Which possibly would make sense for instance where revs are dropping when going uphill and need a lower gear?
    Thx,
    Andrew.

  4. Currently riding a GS, but had quickshifters on S1000, KTM and GS. Though GS is aptly called gearshift assist (it is a bit slow)
Test rode the 1260 multi and S1000xr, they are very smooth.
1st to 2nd. Rarely, it is a ‘big’ gap in the gearbox, it is less forgiving than the other gearchanges.
I took a Tuono out a few years back and was told not to use 1st to 2nd with the shifter..

The common thing, they all work best with the revs up.
MyS1000 was upshift only…it was possible to downshift, smoothly without the clutch, revs, throttle etc had to be just right. You get a feel for it.

  5. Down shifts, yes closed throttle…or just closing, if that make sense?

  6. Agreed they are all different. My K1300S (and R previously) are butter smooth all up changes but think that's an inline 4 thing.
Happy clutching 1 to 2 but just wondered on other peeps experience.

  7. Urban, ie local and 20-30mph I'll use the clutch as my revs will be low. I only really QS when opening the taps. I blip downshift to 1st if deccelerating to a stop from a reasonable velocity. But If pottering, then I clutch it.

I have my 1299 in raceshift too btw. Which I now find more natural now ive gotten used to it. Which didnt take too long tbh.

  8. Agree revs need to be up. I find clutching it from 1 to 2 very smooth, but at low load 2 to 3 less so!? Odd as would think it should be fine, but if the QS is switched on the bike seems to prefer you to use it!?

  9. So, using all my skills I have managed to turn the DQS to upshift only!! Decided that sometimes the down shift is great, others it seems a tad harsh and I think I prefer the "feel" of shifting down manually. Will check it out properly soon as get a chance.
