Ebay Germany To Uk Duty, Vat Etc

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Edward Cunliffe, Jul 26, 2024.

  1. 1200 Enduro for reference, there's a second hand 'comfort' seat on ebay in Germany which I've bought at the moment (seller away until Monday so I have time to cancel) for EUR168.07 with EUR24.79 postage with DHL. £169.58 paid through Paypal.

New from Ducati Store (if they're actually available) shows as £247.68 ...

I may be lucky and not have to pay duty, VAT etc but if i do then it'll get awfully close to new price. Is VAT due on imported second hand parts?

Not sure what to do, any advice please?

  2. If you have already paid VAT on the item in Germany, then the VAT you may have to pay as part of the import duty is solely VAT on the duty, not on the whole item. So if duty is £20, you should pay VAT on £20, so £4 giving a total of £24 to pay if that makes sense? You will no doubt receive an invoice from the seller showing whether or not you have paid VAT at source or not.

  3. Hmmm, thank you, no seller invoice yet but no mention of VAT on the ebay details I can see.

  4. Unfortunately, since Brexit , HMRC is charging VAT on all goods bought from abroad via an online Platform like eBay, even if the item is used. If the price is below £135 this is handled by eBay direct and you'll see it at checkout. In your case VAT will be collected by the delivery company and it's 20% on the item price and also on the delivery cost plus whatever fee the delivery service deem fit. Fees are usually around £12. HMRC don't care if you paid VAT abroad. If you have, you need to claim that back at source.

  5. There is a possibility DHL will try and collect import duty (2nd hand is irrelevant), UK VAT and a handling charge over and above the delivery charge whether it is due or not. Andy

  6. Thanks chaps (or ladies) might as well just buy the new one then.

Don't think I've bought anything from the EU since Brexit, not of significant value anyway.

  7. Have asked them to cancel, couldn't auto cancel for some reason, and ordered through Ducati Store where strangely the price is now £185.76 ...

  8. May end up with two!

  9. Phew, they've refunded me already :)
