Eccentric Hub Bearings Replacement

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by TonyC, Sep 19, 2022.

  1. Panigale 1299 2015 20k mikes.
So, chain adjustment had become very difficult and wheel rotation not as free as it should be.
I’ve taken out the hub and it would appear that there is sign of rusty discharge from the bearings.
I’ve also a feeling that my local stealer will want to sell me a whole replacement hub unit.
However I have picked up on the fact that others in a similar situation have sourced replacement bearings.
Anyone here have experience or knowledge of replacing bearings?

  2. Yep, main dealers will only sell you the new hub. The good news is, they are only £530 from Ducati. :)
Russ at Ducati Mundo, Halifax, might be able to help. He offers a refurb for the smaller 748/998 hubs and might be able to refurb yours. Worth the ask…

  3. Thanks Bettes, I’ll give him a call tomorrow

  4. @TonyC, totally a DIY job so long as you have robust circlip pliers. Pretty sure all the large bore eccentrics have the same bearings and the reference numbers for them are on this forum, probably under my forum name. Not at home now but have the boxes from when I changed my Multistrada 1200 there so will put them up later. Andy

  5. Here you go,
Oil seal is cheap enough from your local dealer. Andy

  6. Thanks Android853sp, that’s great info. I’ll take a look further tomorrow
Did your local guy come up with alternative?
    Cheers

  7. Sadly no. The double ball is an automotive bearing and SKF wouldn’t supply it to them but they sourced the bearing from France for me. Andy

  8. Ah, ok. Thanks.
    Cheers

  9. @Android853sp, hi Andy,
What symptoms presented to prompt you to change your bearings?
    Thx

  10. I do a fairly high mileage in all weathers so have a regular routine for cleaning the eccentric hub when I get a new tyre fitted. No noticeable symptoms but whilst de-gunking the ball bearing, it was obvious the inner race had a lot of lateral movement. Just lucky I picked it up before the bearing seized or collapsed. Andy

  11. That was a lucky find, could have been a nightmare if the bearings collapsed.
I’ve taken the bearings out and the ball race bearings were very stiff. Taken the bearing apart and cleaned… no sign of wear or any odd movement. Clean they wiz round as they should.
The axle I’ve put on the lath to clean up the faces that meet the bearings as there was some slight pitting corrosion. Thing that surprised me here was the poor machining in manufacturing. Actually quite surprised by the corrosion pitting in other areas too.
Will order up the new bearings at the weekend and complete reassembly next week.
    Thanks again.

  12. Leaving this here for future reference. Kindly given by Russ at Ducati Mondo.

These are the bearings for the hub mate:

    1x Bearing: SKF BAH-0175
    1x Bearing: SKF RNA 4910.2RS
2 Seals: 58X72X4 unsprung single lip garter seal but you could use double lip if that is what you can get
    1 Seal Ducati: 93010102A

As an aside, I’ve just had both my front wheel bearings replaced on my brand new front BST wheel. First sign was the MOT tester saying it felt dodgy then after lifting the front end and removing the calipers and spinning the wheel it was dead obvious. Biggest bearing killer? Jet washing even if keeping the spray away.

  13. I never use a replacement Ducati or any other manufacturer’s bearings. A better option is to source the bearings from a bearing supply company. The size of the bearing is always stamped into the bearing. Go to the website for a bearing supplier and you’ll find your size with many options for the quality. The typical Ducati bearing is a little below average. The same bearing from Ducati might cost $40. The same quality and manufacture on-line would be $30. But I like to buy higher quality off-road bearings that typically cost twice the Ducati price. You can get ceramic bearings that are 5 times the Ducati price and quality. I like off-road bearings because they are better sealed. I also like knowing the job is better than the way it came from the factory.

  14. Received the two bearings from 123Bearings.co.uk; great service actually.
Exact replacements. They did charge VaT and supplied vat invoice so avoiding import tax and double vat hit.
    Will reassemble this weekend.
