Ecu Advice Required

  1. I'm looking for some knowledge (a guru) about adapting ECUs across bikes and what is and isn't possible. This is in preparation for a cafe racer build I'm currently starting, I am trying to plan what will work before starting the build. The intention is a ground up bike rebuild so ECUs can be swapped along with harness and injectors and TPS if necessary!

The goal here is to allow a ECU to be connected to an OBD2 adapter with bluetooth, so that an android phone can be used as a dashboard display taking live signals from the ECU. I have the phone software solution in place, so it's a case of making sure the obd2 connector and ECU "talk".

The bike is a 1999 900ie with the Weber-Marelli IAW 1.5M ECU, (green IW031 injectors, non-linear TPS) apparently this model has a protocol that means a direct connection will not work. I am considering installing either the Weber-Marelli IAW 5.9M or 5AM as these will connect to OBD2, these are from the later monsters and 800/1000ie to name a few (note: these bikes seem to use the Pico IWP043 (brown) injectors and linear TPS).

If I was to install a different ECU can I upload a 900ie map as a base setting, and then mod from there based upon the motor internals? Would I need to change the injectors, TPS and harness, fuel pump etc etc...every damn thing else to make it work????!

If private conversations are easier..fire away!

    Cheers

  2. You could use an IAW59M from an S4 or ST4s which would use the same sensors, injectors and a non-linear TPS but you'd need to adapt your loom to take the ECU connector and get the ECU re-mapped to suit the engine. It should probably be possible with an IAW5AM as well.

  3. OK, thanks for the reply Derek, I'll look into that.

  4. The 59M and 5AM will not give you speed output. A GPS dash would be a better route. Using a loom from either a 998 or ST4S (59M) would keep things simpler as they use a mix of old and new tech. The 59M and 5AM do not use the OBD protocol.

  5. How about, 3 pin socket under your seat (ST4S) to OBD2 bluetooth then link to phone via that?

  6. No, but with an appropriate app (e.g. ScanM5X) and a Bluetooth ELM327 it is possible read out the engine sensor parameters - rpm, engine temp, air temp, etc. but you are right Chris, no speed.
