Bike ran fine no issues- did 40 miles. 5 days later, went to start - dead as a dodo, not even enough elec jui ce in battery to turn instrument lights on. Multimeter showed 6v in battery. Battery has now charged on optimate to 13.3 v. Battery is 10 months old. I have a suspicion of the reg /rec - i thought it was a bit questionable last year, but seemed to run ok. question - could a dodgy reg/rec drain a battery/allow a battery to drain whilst stood for 5 days?
or would it, you would be getting a.c at the battery not good. certainly had alternators drawing a lot of currant from battery's when switched off. not expert with bikes as you will of noticed..
thanks for the thoughts finm, I wasn't sure if a screwed/shorted diode would be enough to either actively 'draw' a current away, or merely 'allow' it to drain to fully discharge the battery. when i 'tested' the isolated reg/rec with a multi meter, and then compared with a new one, which i got last year, i got different readings for open circuit/resistance ( not that i know much of what i am doing), which lead me to suspect the reg rec now. I am just bemused by the severe drain of the battery. I have an alarm on it, but it is behaving absolutely normally etc, and don't have any other electrics added. when i get a chance ill put the recharged battery back on, fire up , and test the stator output, and actual reg/rec performance and see if i can tell that way.
if you have a multimeter put it on milliamps check currant draw with reg/rec connected and disconnected. dont forget to put tester leads back to correct position after checking. screwd one or two multimeters forgetting that. usual apology's for teaching to suck eggs.
I am no electrician, all egg teaching most welcome! I usually use the multi meter prongs for pickin me nose....
disconnect your positive lead, select 10amps first on your multimeter leave your black lead on meter in com and move your red over to 10amp bridge positive lead on bike and positive pole on your battery with your meter take a reading if you aint getting much or anything move over to millyamps including your meter leads and check again on a car i would expect 5-10 milliamps. bike 2-4 don't quote me if you think its high disconnect you reg and check again.
cheers for that @finm, I've followed the above religiously and think I've got it done ok. Its getting a bit hot, so i am holding some wires and standing in a bowl of water to cool them down. It looks like this now - should i be getting a reading of -273.15 celsius?
god whats it like having more money than sense. test it. not having a poke at your good self but seriously gets on my you now whats when people throw bits at bikes and cars. where possible and cost effective TEST IT. bit grumpy today.
I will test it !!!!!!- Ive been up at me ma's cooking, gardening and DIYing, and had no chance to tinker. ~Do you think with an 2001 Triumph, and and 1997 916, i am oozing cash.....? ( anyway, as i already have a spare reg rec from buying one last year, its easy to test by changing it , as well)
