1200 Electronic Steering Lock

  1. I've not used my steering lock for about 4 years after it unlocked 500 miles away from home but the bike refused to start and displayed steering lock error on the dash. I googled the issue and the general consensus was to heat the lock with a hairdryer, which worked.
Accidentally locked the steering yesterday, only 35 miles away from home this time, hairdryer did the trick again.
I need to do something about this now though, a hairdryer may not be conveniently available next time!
If I buy a used steering lock, which also looks like it incorporates the emergency start button, is it just plug and play or will the bike need 'reprogramming' to recognise the replacement locking system?
    Any info would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  2. I've not heard of the hairdryer thing before. But assuming it's to heat up the grease/dry the assembly. Why not take it apart and grease it all up properly to fix it for good?

  3. I'm not sure what the hairdryer does, dry it out or heat up the grease? Don't know.
Also not sure if the unit comes apart but I will give it a go when I strip it for headset bearings in a few weeks. Rather not spend £500 on a new replacement, even if I could disable it I'd be happy.

  4. Looked at mine last night, I'd say it's a tricky area to get to, but maybe blast the locking pin with brake cleaner and apply fresh assembly grease. Might be worth a shot before dismantling everything.

  5. Tried all sorts of cleaners and lubricants on the pin, once i have the tank and forks off I'll be able to get a better look.

  6. I’ve had mine for almost a year and never engaged that lock once. Too many scare stories about it not unlocking again! If truth be told I’ve forgotten how to engage it anyway. I was shown when I bought it it but long forgotten now!
