Hi Bluey, I think! An s model had a deep sump on the 999 There are possibilities that early engines having your code also came from late 996 and their higher spec models, but they had shallow sump, ask @Exige as he has some of this info in here in 2012 If you do a search there there are discriptions from Ducati.ms site and this site and it should be enough to confirm, People are saying if you have frame number from bike the a VIN decoder or Ducati will actually confirm, but they cannot confirm from an engine code for some reason, That was just a quick search I done last night
All production 999S bikes had deep sump engines from 2003 model year onwards. My 998 engine number (base model) starts with ZDM998W4 as the one above - I guess the 999 did too but I have sold my 999S so can't check. This engine of course was designed for the 999 and not the 998 which only acted as a mule in essence.
Thanks all. This particular engine I am looking at is already in a different frame, a track bike, so I guess I would know without opening it up.
Is it a shallow sump or not? If it's a deep sump it is an S engine or was that not what the question was? :smileys:
Ah, I misunderstood. Deep sump 999 = S Shallow sump 999 = Base ???? Now, mine is a 749s, which I 'think' is deep sump. Am I correct?
And yes, all 999S had deep sump. The 03/04 base models had shallow, not sure on the 05/06 base models though but someone will know if these remained with the shallow sump or not.
All 749 - shallow sump All 749S - shallow sump All 749R - deep sump 999 2003-2004 - shallow sump 999 2005-2006 - deep sump All 999S - deep sump All 999R - deep sump The later base 999's have the "S" cams so the power output is the same on all later 999/999S models.
As I said above, the 999 engine (998cc) was developed for the 999 and used in the 998 before the 999 came into production
