A while a go I brought an engine which I brought as a 400ss engine. I got as spares for my 400 monster as they run 400ss engines. The bike belonged to a chap who had a 600ss DD bike was going to start up DD but found the engine " slow" the. Thought must be a 400 engine. So I brought it. Except .... Checking my 400 engine the number certainly does include 400 in the engine number .. So I checked the number on this engine expecting to find 600 and the possibility of a worn 600ss engine . Now I'm very confused and rather concerned . View attachment 17793 that's not right ZDM 500AZG 000007 Now concerned .

The next bit would seem to imply that it's a 500cc engine, as this bit is usually the engine size. Not sure how to decode the next bit - looks like "A2G" to me I don't have a decoder for that bit, but using a VIN number decoder "A" would be Air Cooled, "2" would normally mean 600cc, and "G" would mean 1986... All this probably just adds to the confusion...
Looks like ZDM 500 A2C 000007, in which case the format is correct for a Ducati 500cc, air-cooled, twin with serial no. 000007. However as Nelly says the stamping looks home-made and I don't think there was a 500cc? Maybe it's a 400cc that's been bored/stroked? and someone has taken it upon themselves to rename it? Can you post some pics of the whole engine, maybe someone will recognise the model. I suppose the easiest way to verify the CC is to take a head off and measure the bore & stroke.
Nog...............probably............ The actual casting does look as though it has been 'cleaned' so possibly whatever could have been there has been filed off.....But are we looking at a Pantah engine here? Although, the question has been asked about the same engine before.........its here with pics....and it seems someone (phil h) might know the answer... Bugger !!! - Ducati Sporting Club
No I brought it off a chap in Cambridge it was in an SS Track bike . It was not an engine off Nog. I brought it as a 400cc engine to play with or spares for my 400cc monster. Which runs and old 400 ss engine basically . Now I'm confused. I wanted an engine to work on / learn to work on . Now I'm totally confused what I have.
Aha yes that's my engine and that tallys up!!! He was confused as seemed slow so assumed he had a 400 ... As it was slow . I can confirm as a 400 owner it's a revvy engine but is sedate. I get over the speed limit on big roads if I open my 400 up cough if I need to get out of someone's way !!!!!! But they are not fast . But quite fun. How do I contact the chap who said PM sent ? I'd just like to know what I have and what is in my basement
The chap asking questions on that forum is the chap I brought it from and that's what he told me . Was too slow ... And then realised it was 400 engine . The engine was up for sake as a 400 engine . Which is the only reason I purchased it as they are hard to find . Il take a photo of my 400 monsters engine stamp later be interesting to see who they compare the 400 is stamped 400. If this number is hand stamped does this mean I have an engine of questionable origin ? I'd never touch an engine with out a stamp . Years back I went to buy a YDS7 engine and when I arrived the number had been filed off ... I walked away of course . I'd never knowing touch anything iffy . Or pass it on . Anyone who knows me as a person would know this as I'm too honest for my own good too often.
phil H was phil huntley? he raced in that there dd when it began class b bobbie......his father in law was Fordie there must be someone who still has his contact details...id try Anthonye on here he's a big shout on the DSC.......
Try to measure the internal diameters of the inlet manifold and exhaust ports........that might give us a clue.
I don't think so. Pantah engines normally have the engine number stamped behind the rear cylinder above the gearbox something like this: DM500L*0001234* The stamping is done by hand, so it's not completely regular, and is direct into the surface of the crankcase casting so no prepared rectangular area.
