Engine Not Reving Out Again

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by **Topher**, Feb 2, 2014.

  1. Has anybody had a problem with the engine not revving past 6 / 7000 rpm.

I started getting the exhaust valve fault showing few months ago then an intermittent fault with the engine feeling it was choked around 6000 rpm but no fault showing.
I had the bike back to dealers for service and to sort the valve fault and all was good but took it out for a quick run this afternoon and it won’t rev past 6 / 7000 rpm.

I’m wondering if there is a coil or plug breaking down.

Has anybody else experienced this problem?

  2. Hi Topher. It sounds like a classic exhaust valve stuck closed. Probably the original fault has recurred - a fault is not always generated.

This is a common problem as you will read on here and most end up having it disabled to stay fixed in the open position or removed altogether.

  3. I had this on my 998. It was the plug lead for the front cylinder, so I would suspect the front coil pack.

Rather than experimenting though, I would suggest getting it to a dealer and plugged in to see if it has registered any fault codes.

  4. Funny you should say about a coil pack.
i too suspect it could be a coil pack and instinct leads me to the front cylinder from the engine sound when it's faulting.

  5. You can hear the exhaust valve make a self test when you turn on the ignition. It goes from open to closed to open again. If you can hear this, the ex valve is working. If it were stuck, the bike vould likely also throw a fault message in the circular display.

  7. Exhaust valve maintenance...

  8. Almost certainly the exhaust valve corroding and sticking, exactly the symptoms demonstrated by my Multi:frown:
Give it a damn good clean, douse it in WD40, give the various moving parts a liberal dose of copper grease and you should be 'good to go'!!
This approach worked for me, for others......

  9. What did it turn out to be Topher?

  10. Not sure yet as I haven't been to pick it up, but will feed back when i find out.
Bloody weather .... its not that I'm a fair weather motorcyclist I just cant be arse'd with all the cleaning.

  11. Exhaust valve was the problem.... as suggested in your posts.
The complete exhaust box has been changed to cure the fault.
I cant believe how different the motor runs now.
All the low speed rough running has virtually disappeared.
It was a right hand full in town and now much easier to ride.

  12. Sorry to wake this thread up again, but I don't want to be accused of not doing a search first.

I had a similar problem yesterday, I'd ridden about 5 miles when I tried to open the bike up but she just felt flat and wouldn't rev past 8k, I did notice a lot of induction roar or it seemed like that but just no pull your arms off power.
But after a few more miles it seemed to clear it's self, no codes or any thing on the dash just not reving out in first and second.
I road all day through the twisty up by Devils bridge and Hawes then down the back roads to Lancaster, I stopped to fill up and when I set off again it did the same thing, then stopped when I got her into 3rd gear.

Today I took the heat shield off my exhaust and looked at the exhaust valve pulley. Feck me! for 2000 miles it looked rusty. Any how I had a fiddle with it, the servo was making all the right noises but the pulley wasn't moving. When I tried it with my fingers it was jammed half open.
I gave it a good blast with WD but it didn't seem to make much difference only during the servo test it was staying fully open now and when I closed it by hand it made a tinny squeak if you know what I mean.
dose this sound like it's what was making my engine feel flat? I can't work it out because most of the day the bike felt awesome lifting the front wheel over the cats eyes and odd bump.

  13. Exact symptoms jc. flat as a witches tit at 6000 rpm on mine and no fault displayed on the clocks.
It was freed of by dealer but only lasted a few miles so they replaced the exhaust box.
It now rides like a completely different bike, low speed town riding is much more enjoyable.
I think if ..... no .... when!! it happens again I will take a Dremel to the valve.

  14. jc classic symptoms. Maybe after you have been running at speed for a while the valve is vibrating open a bit more and allowing more power. This will not last!

Get it totally disabled as described by rivets - it is the only long term solution. (Apart from CJS doing it electronically) Despite the cover crud just seems to collect in the valve area and cause it to seize no matter how often you clean it. As its hot in there lubrication is of limited help.

  15. I've been looking around on the net. can any one confirm if when the servo pulls the cable it's opening or closing the exhaust valve?
I assumed it was opening it and it was sprung closed, but other forums are saying the spring holds it open and the cable closes it.

That doesn't make sense to me, I know my R1 exhaust valve opened it at 6000 rpm to pass UE law on noise control, I assumed Ducati do the same?

  16. The valve is open by default.........and closed through the rpm range that noise regulation testing is done (acting as a baffle;-) and then opens again the other side of that rev range.

  17. Disable the thing

  18. Ive disabled mine on my 1198. Just to point out that the only downside is a slight over fuelling at tick over/low revs. This will be sorted once I get it on a dyno.

  19. Thanks for that Andy.
I do still find it strange. I've never heard of an exhaust system that restricts the gas flow the more you rev it. That's how we used to derestrict out RD152 all those years ago, take out the 2 exhaust restrictors.

  20. Is there a specific way to disable it or do you just remove the cable?
