Engine oil worries/ troubles, advice required please.....

  1. Hi all, I went round to my garage earlier to check on my bike and I'm a little bit concerned to say the least.

There is a great deal of condensation in the oil window and also it looks like there is scum inside

I removed the filler cap and I can see scoring quite visibly, please can you take a look at the images and give me some advice??

  2. Most likely just condensation and needs a good run to warm it up then remove the filler cap and let it evaporate.

  3. The condensation issue should be able to be cleared by getting the engine up to full working temperature and then parking up the bike and removing the filler cap to allow the condensate to vent to atmosphere. If it's not fully cleared after the initial attempt, try it again. Probably a result of you not riding the bike for long enough!
The 'scoring' issue that you refer to looks to me like normal machining marks.

  4. Really?

Can anyone check their bike for me please to see if they have the same markings inside the casing?

Also what about the scummy looking buildup?!

  5. Very common this time o'year.

  6. I wet out at the weekend, did about 50 miles, and wasn't hanging about, when I got home I noticed that the viewing window was like yours, and I thought that it had got up too a good temperature...........

  8. Thanks for all the replies folks, I need to get out on it, weather sucks in this country!!

  9. The scoring is just the machining, mine is the same, all will be :)

The condensation, I don't know why people worry so much. It's winter, of course there will be condensation. Unless the bike is in a heated garage and only outside in the elements when at operating temp, it will have condensation. Wouldn't worry about it. I did a good 80 mile trip on the weekend gone, and it was still cloudy.

Even a good run won't clear it up. I bet you by summer it will be gone and you would have long forgotten :)

  10. Thanks for putting my mind at rest, roll on Summer lol

  11. You can still remove the filler plug after a good run as mentioned to allow the accumulated condensation to escape. Leave the filler cap off overnight after a good run. Just don't forget to replace it the next time you use the bike. I bet things look improved it you do this.

  12. This makes perfect sense to me

  13. I will give it a shot. Won't leaving it out overnight cause more condensation though? I leave mine out but under a carport.

  14. Its fucked, I'll give you £500 for it

  16. cheers John im out on it tomorrow so will try your method and report back

  17. Noticed a similar emulsion in mine yesterday, first run out for a couple of weeks though.

  18. Cup of tea for you at boxhill next time I see you John your trick works, quick trip out earlier engine temp didn't go above 70, back home put it in the garage running until it hit 103 and the fans cut in, let it cool a bit and removed the fillet, bike now cold an no gunk

  19. I would have thought there would be an oil breather tube somewhere that would allow the condensation to evaporate without having to remove the filler cap. Could it be that the ones getting the condensation buildup have a kinked tube?

  20. Both the dukes I've owned did this, and both my brother's bikes, they all do it. It's nothing to worry about. A female friend of mine has been having similar issues with her Suzuki TL1000, convinced she was facing a blown head gasket. One two-up blast to the coast and back fixed it...
