Engine oil

  1. Hello again, what engine oil do you all use in your ST's.
Ive been using Motul 300v but am considering trying Shell Ultra 4.

    Thanks again

  2. Use whatever you like mate, it's all oil.

  3. I use Shell Ultra quite cheap from M and P at the moment, they also do an oil and filter package complete with free filter removal tool. I got one the other day seems quite good value and the filter is an Hi-flo item.

  4. Thank you, saw Shell Ultra recommended in the manual and its almost half the price of Motul !!

  5. Motul is mega expensive and to be honest unless you are doing trackdays or thrashing the bike a lot it's not worth it for such a top of the range oil, there are others that will do the job adequately.

  6. I have a good mate that tests engines and components to destruction under many different environments Useing different lubricants, he says although all modern lubricants are adequate for normal use the top of the range. oils perform noticeably much better and would always recommend using the best you can afford.

  7. But the most expensive is not always the best...

  8. The vast majority of people here don't get to within 50% of their engines' potential, and this whole debate about oil is pointless until you actually start stressing the engine. Far more important to run the engine up to full running temperature (to alleviate moisture) and to stick to the service intervals than it is to buy super expensive oil. I used to smash the spuds out of my dispatch hacks on Halfords' finest without ill effects. Just feed it regularly.

  9. If you love your bike, value it, cherish it, thrash it and plan on keeping it plus see the benefits of fewer rebuilds, lower service costs etc then use the 300v.

If you couldn't give a toss use cooking oil.

Yes, I am a fan of Motul products for which I will now receive abuse, thank you.

Seriously tho, if you opt for the shell get the 15-50. I can't be arsed to explain why.

  10. I do use quite a few of the Motul products too from chain lube, coolant to oil and rate them well. Thanks for all the replies again. Always useful.

  11. The dealer I bought my ST3 from used Agip Racing 10w 60, which seems a little OTT. My question is would I be OK to top up with any decent fully synthetic, or should I use the same? It is the dry clutch model BTW :)

  12. I understand the benefits of using 60w in Ducatis or MV's etc but not 10w for the lower spectrum - in an ideal world 15-60w would be 'optimum' choice to cover all bases for Ducati engines especially given the hot summer we've had. On average tho 15-50w is a good compromise of low and high temperature viscosity for our mainly average conditions.

As to whether you can use any synthetic with your Agip I can't really answer, I asked the same question of Motul products some time ago and was advised "yes as long as it's the same type 7100 300v 5100 etc". Which is as clear as mud, given each manufacturers specs ....

Personally I would advise against mixing brands but see no reason why you couldn't top-up with say a 10-40w or a 15-50w full-synthetic Agip, not ideal granted but a reasonable compromise.

Apologies if that reads a little arse about face but I think you know what I mean ...

  13. Thanks for your useful response Greyman :)

  14. Oh, and another oil based question. Any tips for topping up oil without taking lower panel off?

  15. Funnel with a tube ...
