Engine Paint

  1. Hi

Need to tidy up the flaking engine paint on MY2001 996. Silver frame, 5 spoke.

Can anyone recommend anything other than RS Paint which is a slightly eye watering £26.40 for 1x400ml can delivered.

    Thx

  2. Just use any crap you have laying around. It worked for ducati.

  3. They are on eBay for a lot less but how good the colour match is is hard to say. If you can find a motor factor with a spectrum analyser and can give him a sample of paint then you should be able to get it matched and put into a spray can. This will then be diluted and good enough for touching up by brush and also for larger areas.

As an indication a litre of paint is about £30-35 from a moderately priced motor factor and RS paints seem to charge a lot more for what they supply and in a smaller quantity.

I used them once to buy paint for a repair on a CBR600RR Honda and the cost of the materials was very expensive and the paint was water based just like Ducati use now. So I wouldn't necessarily expect the touch up paint to be different and therefore unless the surface is prepared and sealed and primed well then it could flake again.

  4. I used Simoniz hi temp aluminium on my Monster and Mrs H's YBR 125. it seems to be a reasonable match and durable.

  5. From what I have seen the grey is dependant on which day it was made, a little like the yellow. You don't need to be a close match to look genuine but it will be difficult to match an existing case as there is no specific accurate standard on the originals :)

  8. Nice, did you just run down with wet/dry ? Did you split the cases to spray?

  9. The cases were apart to have the cylinder studs replaced ( a fault on early Monsters) So I took advantage of this. I cleaned then up with a combination of a wire brush on a Dremel and wet & dry / emery paper. Then decreased everything with thinners.
I painted the wife's Yamaha engine in situ with lots of masking

  10. I used a yellow spray that had the DUCATI paint code etc for my 748's mirrors (£10)

Not the best match but quite close.... got to remember that paint fades and ages!
