Hi does anyone know how much it would roughly cost for an inline 4 engine rebuild. I've got a 2001 zx6r as my second bike that has 25k on it and was looking at getting it re built. The bike has sentimental value and used to belong to a friend that died and he wasn't the most mechanically sympathetic and it wasn't serviced that often. The bike won't ever be sold so would like to get the engine re built and possibly put updated needles in at the time and maybe some other work to increase the power
To some degree it possibly doesn't but my long term plan is in someway to get the bike mechanically mint and make it a bit quicker. It's cosmetically challenged but not massively bothered about that. It is quite tappity though but seems to decrease when warm
If it's of sentimental value, I wouldn't risk it being written off by even riding it. Some things are too important to lose. But if you must, I agree with above in that it would probably only need valves re-shimmed and cam chain/tensioner checking along with usual service items. Couple of hundred should cover it doing it at home, could be £500 to 1K at a garage. Most of which would be labour and dependant on their hourly rate.
a mate has done over 40k on his, rough as old boots and rattles like a snake shagging a mongoose. But starts and runs every time he presses the button
Ok thanks. I'm not mechanically minded so would be a garage job. Oil was dropped when I got it towards end of last year and had forks stripped down with new seals and oil ect and had front calipers completely stripped with new seals and pads. I'll look at getting it booked in for full service inc valve clearances then.
We used the 1000 and 1100 Kwacker engines in our outfits..........wrung the a*se out of them, but they never let go...... Also I have had seven 4 stroke Kwacker solos, and never had an engine issue with any of them........
At that mileage if the valves havent been done they will need checking. Cam chains go "ttttttttttttttt" when off throttle as they rattle or at least my old gixer did when the tensioner went. It was loud and you really knew it. If its tapping or rattling a bit when warm its normal, just check the valves and ask the garage to inspect the cam chain when they do the valves as the cover and cam has to come out anyway. If it does need a new one or tensioner its not a big job. I wouldnt go near a main dealer for that sort of work. Better to scoot about the Kwak forums for good indis as they might actually do the job your paying them to do..... Honestly, good solid engines so dont worry.
