Hey chaps, So, a niggly issue that I meant to get down on before the winter break, is that occasionally when coming to a stop at junction/traffic lights, the engine will stall after about 10secs of being stationary. (2001 748R)…..it’s done it about 5-6 times this weekend, in 130 miles of riding. It only happens occasionally, perhaps 15-20% of the time. It always fires straight back up but of course it can really catch you out, e.g., when just about to enter onto a roundabout or nip out on a T-junction. I also can’t narrow it down to whether I’m sitting there in 1st with the clutch in, or whether it’s in neutral with clutch out, seems to do it in both scenarios. If I had to put my chips down on one vs the other, I’d say it’s more frequent when in neutral. No spluttering or a slowing in idle speed, it literally just dies. Battery is new. The regulator>generator plug is brand new and significantly upgraded, super-duper battery cables are on there as well, so I’m confident it’s not the charging circuit (but of course, happy to investigate anyones thoughts on this). New Magnecor HT leads were fitted last year, along with new (correct spec for the “R”) plugs. When I fire up the bike cold, it idles beautifully for minutes at a time right up to being ready to ride off. I’ve not got a carb balancer gauge, so haven’t yet checked balance between H & V cylinders. I do have a vacuum gauge, but can’t use that with shower style injectors of course. I also haven’t played with increasing the idle speed; kind of reluctant to do this as it feels very happy when not stalling! Any thoughts? Cheers in advance, Spencer
My 748r used to do it all the time, build up of fuel on the butterfly's (shower injectors) then when you go to pull away it then dumps all the fuel in the motor cutting it out.
Ahhh interesting, thanks Cookster. In which case, I’ll drill some holes in the butterflies to stop the excessive fuel pooling! (Joking) Joking aside, even though it’s generally not stalling when I twist the throttle (it’s usually before, whilst I’m hands-off the bars and stretching my back!), I guess it’s when the build-up reaches the point where it then trickles off the butterfly plate on it’s own accord. If that’s BAU, then cool, I can live with it; I’ll just mentally adjust to expect it to do it, rather than not.
I've no wish to start an argument, but I've owned two 748R's neither of which exhibited the symptoms you describe, so if the CPS, TPS, throttle balance and CO were set up correctly then your bike would run as designed. Quite a few Ducatis I've worked on when owners have complained of poor running have, at some stage been 'adjusted' incorrectly, or possibly even left the factory incorrect, once set up to factory specs. and assuming no other fault is causing the poor running, they have all run well.
