Hi, have an 04 999 that i've just recently refurbed top to bottom. Engine has been apart for checking and painting. Heads all reshimmed and whole motor rebuilt with new gaskets and belts etc. Tension set with the harmonic gauge. Runs and pulls great and all that but it feels very vibey at high revs, say 7k upward. Is it me?? I don't think so cause I'm sure it wasn't like that before. It hasn't been what you could call thrashed thru its life. Anybody got any thoughts on this super urgent matter?? regards etc....
Did they check the bottom end? My 848 smooths out around 4.5k, so if the vibration is getting worse the more it revs it may be an issue.
My 02 ST4 916 is a little viby after 8000rpm ( start to feel through the bars & pegs ) - I thought it was just as it has passed the max torque rpm of 7500 rpm and was heading to max power rpm at 9000 rpm. I thought it was normal for an old bike? but maybe its not? Your 999 has max torque at 8000 rpm & max power at 9500 rpm. Mine has done 18k miles & has been well serviced & looked after. Will be interested if you find anything.
My 996 got a bit vibey when the main bearings were going. Everything that spins on these things is a little out of balance, taking them apart and rebuilding could move things enough for it all to feel worse. After getting my bottom end blueprinted i couldn't believe how smooth the big old lump could actually be. As much as it pains me to even suggest it, if it feels bad, it probably is, so it might be strip and rebuild time again to prevent it going pop. What ever you do it'll be interesting to find the cause so please keep us all posted.
My 848 started to have a fairly vibey mid range felt mainly through the seat. I was thinking mains etc but discovered the other day that the exhaust has cracked where it loops under the swingarm. The vibes i felt was the exhaust itself accompanied by a slight hissing/spitting sound. I only discovered it as i spotted water dripping out of the crack when i fired the bike up in the workshop to listen for any bad noises from the motor. The crack is along a weld, which are not the greatest welds i have ever seen by a long shot.
