996 Eprom "extra"

  1. Can anyone tell me what this item is? The eprom was mounted on it and then itself mounted in the ECU. It's on a 996 -00.

  2. Can you post a clear photo of the numbers on top of the IC please? (The black mystery object)

  3. That looks like the sub board that FIM used to mount their eproms on.

  4. Ive seen similar used in car ecu's to encrypt the chip data so it can't be copied without the correct software tool. But they have been solder in place to the chip and ecu's.

  5. Any idea what it does?

  6. If it is a FIM board, then it mods the way the memory allocations are used by the ECU. Duane had a clever idea to use the memory allocation given over to storing error messages in to using it as a 2nd storage area for the rear cylinder mapping.
If it is FIM, then when you connect to diagnostics, you can't read the error messages and the live data is all over the place...it can't be read. That was the trade off to having mappable cylinders and individual maps for both cylinders. The eprom in the picture isn't a FIM though. It has been manually written on, so it could be a copy???
