1200 Exhaust Manifold Stud Sheared And Stuck Solid!

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Jon Browne, Dec 16, 2022.

  1. Hi all.

Bit of a drama really. I have a sheared exhaust manifold stud on the horizontal head (2013MY) 1200S. Ducati dealer have the bike and have removed the head but still can't get it out. I live in the Leicestershire area. Does anyone know of an engineering company that could help, or any other solution?

  2. This is for the dealer to resolve. This is not uncommon.
Plenty of threads on here about this issue.
They'll have to weld a nut or longer thread and wind it out or drill it out.

  3. Thanks Siddo. They have given up and are saying that they don’t know an engineering company to use. If I can figure me one to sort it myself, do you think they will charge me for the hours trying to fix it?

  4. Doesn’t sound like a very good dealership then. I usually just weld a nut on and extract them that way, not sure why they have removed the head either.

  5. Don't let them fob you off. They broke it so they fix it.
Do a Google map search for a mobile welder and you can get one local to you. Better still, tell the clowns in the dealership to do this.

  6. They can try but tell them to jog on. It was fine until they touched it.

  7. It’s not clear from the initial post whether the dealer caused the damage - can you clarify?

  8. Weld a nut or bolt on. Or cut flush and drill it out if it’s off the bike then a lot easier.

  9. If a “dealer” can’t sort this then I’d definitely be looking for another dealer.
It’s, sadly, a very well known issue and all the previous responses are directing you toward the most common and successful resolution. One I’ve used myself.

  10. The damage was caused by me. I couldn’t get the stud out so called the dealer who told me; as others have stated; that it is a common problem that they could fix. I booked it in - and had to wait 8 weeks - just for them to remove the stud. They did call for my authority to take the head off but, the fact remains that they can’t actually complete the job that the bike was in there for!
Since the last post, I have a friend who has an engineering company who has told me that he can get it sorted. Im picking the head up tomorrow and taking it to him

  11. Just a suggestion once done fit good copper or stainless nuts to avoid it happening again.
