Evening all Having just snagged a set of Termi’s for my 1200R for the very bargain price of £131 due to a bit of road rash, where’s good to buy things like the stainless bands and possibly the carbon tubes? Aftermarket is ok. Ta! Ped
I have yet to get a quote from :- https://www.carbonfibretubes.co.uk/contact/ I get the feeling that would need a bulk-buy, but a lot of people use:- https://pjengineering.co.uk/ @Sev is the man to comment here, as you need the right weave, and the appearance of your choice, matt/satin/gloss etc.
Cans turned up today, small scuff on the top can tube at the front and on the end cap. Bottom can looks ok. Main issue is the stainless steel cap on the front of both has worn through slightly- nothing major and easily tig weldable. Bands probably need replacing all round
Got stuck in to repairing the cheapo Termi’s, jeez I think the previous owner kept his bike in a swamp…. pics as they arrived and after some work. Tubes are PJ Engineering, £40 each, ok quality but not cut straight (about 2mm pissed) so needed fettling, colour is something I’m not sold on, might paint them satin black. Bands and rivets from eBay, scuff on the end cap repaired with epoxy putty, the both sprayed with Hammerite Satin Black along with the mounting bracket. Front end caps were tig’d by a friend then dressed back by me. All polishing by muggins too, messy job… so should I paint the carbon?
Really not sure I like the colour of the carbon, seems to have a slight green tinge to it, hence me thinking about painting them satin black
I might be wrong here ,but i imagine a home spray job might look a bit naff ,but then you might be a expert at it and they will look great ,
I think they'd look shit! The 'green tinge' doesn't look that much different to the old Termis on my 916 & Monster, albeit they don't have the shiny finish. Maybe sand down the lacquer and apply a matt finish? Personally I'd leave them as they are.
Seems the green tinge is exaggerated but the slightly crap lighting in my workshop and checking them today in sunlight (yeah, how good is that!) they look less green. Still unsure on the super shiny finish so satin lacquer may be enough
thanks Sev, I think satin would be best, any recommendations for suitable product? I’m scouring eBay at the moment
Here’s the finish article, left the cans glossy which I think now was the right thing to do. Final polish today, fitted the bands, you need the strength of a gorilla to “pop” stainless steel blind rivets! I had to use the vice to close the pop rivet gun! Gotta say I’m very pleased with the results and I’ve had the Upmap installed at Moto Rapido yesterday during service so now itching to get out! Ped
I will be very interested in the difference the up map makes to the feel of the bike ,even though i have a SC project can but no upmap yet .
The 1200R is not slouch in stock form but I’d say the upmap dials it up to 11, it seems smoother and pulls from a bit lower down really cleanly. Finding a genuine upmap is like finding rocking horse poo, took me ages. Upmap now do their T800+ system for the R, released last year, pretty sure they do maps for SC cans. the uk dealer is here https://www.motorcycleperformancest...i_Monster_1200_RS_201420--product--19234.html Ped
Just totted up what I’ve spent… Damaged cans - £130 Carbon tubes £80 Bands £30 Rivets and a few other odds and sods £15 Tig welding £40 New Termi badge £7 So about £300 all in, add the £200 I paid for the Upmap, £500 is a big saving over the £1600 or so Ducati quoted me on Friday!
