hi guys, My wife is coming on a trip to Italy and the top box and panniers are clearly not big enough to take the kitchen sink? Does anyone know of a bag that sits on top of the panniers?
Heck, all she needs to pack is a bikini and a toothbrush. Since you're going to Italy, she only needs half.
Not sure i would want to put extra weight on the panniers, the fixings are not the strongest. You can get a rollbag that should sit on top of the top box but you will probably need to fix it well with rockstraps.
For real..?? Two panniers and a top box seems to be enough for the rest of the planet.! Tell her to pack light so she can stuff the boxes with Versace, Azzarro, Armani, Ferragamo etc I’m sure she’ll agree...
I never ever thought I'd have a top box on a bike, let alone be recommending one. The Ducati top box swallows a hell of a lot of stuff or 2 helmets. Excellent on a tour. Also gave my Mrs reassurance as she could lean against it and not get flipped off the back.
Just read your post again. You already have a top box. Not sure I'd want to add any more weight than 2 panniers and a top box. I'd suggest a small bag of washing powder!
If you need more room, consider using a tank bag. I use a sw motech Trail XL (don't think they make this one any more). I can fit all our paperwork, waterproofs, spare gloves, small water bottles, etc into this. Its essentially an additional 20 litres of luggage space. We've done 2 week trips with nothing more than the normal panniers, topbox and tank bag. In fact we even did a 10 day trip from new york to new orleans on a hired bike, fitted my tank bag ring to their bike, and carried all our stuff for the trip with us. It can be done, you/she just need to be a bit more inventive on what you really need to take. For example, don't take a fleece for the evenings, take a mid layer that will double up as night jacket or riding layer if needed. Pack quick-dry walking trousers, not bulky jeans. Be prepared to do a bit of washing mid trip if necessary. Or take old T shirts that you are prepared to throw away and can ditch as the days go by. To answer your question directly, the only bags I have seen are designed by touratech to fit on the metal panniers of the GS. They will fit the Enduro panniers, but not the plastic normal ones. Hope that helps.
Not sure quite what to advise. My Multistrada carries all what we take on tour, in 2 panniers and a top box. I did free up a bit more space on our recent trip to Germany by fitting a tank bag but that was only for the first aid and puncture repair kits, spare bulbs, breathalyser and spare cylinders for the Helite air bag vests. Perhaps I’m lucky in that my companion is happy in jeans, T-shirt and a pair of Sketchers. Doesn't stop us going out and we’ve never been refused a table, no matter how seemingly posh the restaurant is. Oh yes, 2 items that always get packed by her no matter what the forecast, a warm jumper and hair straighteners. Andy
Interesting thread, being as I've just finished packing the bike, 2 panniers and top box + small tank bag for our trip our 12 day trip to Poland, the more tours you do the more you realise just how much you don't need, we hardly travel light but criteria A: it must all go in the space provided. BTW travel wash doesn't take up much room, shoes do though .
I'm away from the bike at the moment but I'm sure the top box max is 5kg and panniers are 10kg....as has been mentioned though no one will ever stop at 5kg in a top box. Me and the other half had a trip up the coast BH Monday and I must've had at least 15kg in there and that included some "spirited" riding when she wasnt looking.... It's likely to be a limit to cover the manufacturers arse if it all goes pear shaped.
