Any ideas how to extract these, got extractors in there but the bolts are now spinning, suspect captive nut is spinning, it's a 996 seat , I'm trying not to wreck the seat unit as it may be of use to someone e
If the captive nuts are spinning you're a little F****d really. If it was me I'd add the smallest spot of weld I could on the edge of the fastener head to stop it spinning, then drill the heads off. Then tidy it up afterwards. You could try center punching around the edge of the head to lock it in position, but I don't think it would work.
Or, having thought about it for two minutes. Find a piece of small diameter steel bar, or flat bar, long enough to span the heads of the screws and tack weld that to the edge of the heads so you are not touching the bracket with any weld. Obviously I understand not everyone has a metal joining gun in the garage, but I don't know how I'd survive without mine.
This, is what you are looking at. The brass threaded insert is heat sealed into the seat plastic. If the insert is turning, I'm afraid you are in for a difficult time. Andy
Might have to sacrifice the seat unit, it is a track unit I bought cheap years ago , appears to be carbon fibre though.
If you do not need the bracket, leave it alone and pass on. If you need the bracket, cut off the bolt heads with a hacksaw blade.
If the seat pad is fubarred, you should be able to access the back of the brass insert by removing the pad cover. Worth a look if the seat unit is carbon. Andy
I agree, if the captive nuts are spinning there isn't really a good method to get them out. I've had the captive inserts spin in an airbox (the air tubes on a 999) and in the end I had to just tear out the insert with force and violence (and harsh words too)...then tidied up the fcked area with a new insert held in with epoxy. The repair is invisible (and would be in your case too), and should be ok as long as the new bolt isn't overtightened... Maybe as Andy says, go in "from the top"?
Bolts jammed solid , and were rounding off so started drilling then put the extractor in hoping the bolts would come out, all I achieved was to free the captive nuts, will try a saw blade on the bolts if not may see if they'll prize out or weld a bar as Nasher suggested
oh, that takes me back. Vauxhall used to do similar with their T.Belt covers. i used to just keep em spinning and pull the cover away and the captive nut would wear/burn it's way through. once removed i would do a repair.
77750342B. Should be under £5 from Ducati for a pack of 5. It is a M5x12 counter sunk Allen head. It should be a simple job to make a threaded plate to cover the holes and epoxy/pop rivet in place. Google ‘Threaded Plate’ for off the shelf. plenty of copper slip on assembly should help prevent a repeat.
