Extras... What are they worth and are they any good?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by freshage, Nov 11, 2013.

  1. So, the 1200S Touring that I'm picking up on Saturday has a few extras, can someone give me a rough idea on price they would sell for (mint condition) and if they are worth keeping and why?

    Ducati top box (red)
Gel comfort seats (rider and pillion)
    After market screen (this one)

From my test rides previously, yes the stock screen is pants. So I would like a permanent solution, but that one with the bike is a little bit ugly for my taste... I was hoping the washer fix that ever bangs on about would be good enough. Thus me selling the above screen.

The seats, I'm a young (25) gun, my self and my better half are hardly going to have comfort issues as our hips are still our own. So unless they offer a dramatically huge difference. I will probably sell them and put the money towards a new exhaust (chav yo).

As for the top box, well I imagine it will come in handy. But I like to camp and I would rather strap down the tent, sleeping bags and mats down where the top box would go but I guess it will have it's uses on nice weekends away when not camping... None the less, a price would be nice :)

    Thanks!

  2. Look up the prices on the accessories list.
the top box and seats should sell pretty easily if priced right.
i would pitch them about 60% of new costs.

the seats are definitely worth having if you do longer trips. Nothing to do with hips, its the shape and apparently different density foam that means they change your position and avoid / delay numb bum.
the shape of the pillion o e stops them migrating forward under heavy braking.
we up the top box on regardless of whether its needed, as the wife feels more secure a d has a back rest for the lo get boring stretches.
i never used to use a top box but wouldnt be without it on this bike

    hope that helps ;)

  3. That does mate, I guess I could go for a few trips with the 2 seat options and see how I feel. Going to Scotland next month... Does the standard seat come with the pillion hump?

Also, does the gel seat hinder any movement for when you get to some twisties?

  4. Firstly, I am assuming the seats you are talking about are the Ducati Touring seats. These are not Gel seats.

The standard pillion seat is flatter with less of a pronounced hump at the front. Its not a huge visible difference but makes a noticeable difference to the pillion.

You shouldn't have any issues with the touring seats, and they certainly won't spoil your fun.
I ordered our seats from day 1, and having used them for the last 3 years I prefer them. I can get pegs / levers down either side without a problem, solo or two up.
Personally I don't hang off the bike, but you can easily do so. If you look at the standard seat it has angular edges, whereas the comfort / touring seat has more of a smoother curved transition.

Infact the only real issue two up is trying to keep the front wheel on the ground

  5. So what is the main difference then? Ride height the same?

  6. I'm not convinced its any lower (although it could be), just a different shape.
Also the cover of the touring seat has a fake carbon weave around the edge piece of the seats.

its been a while since I did a 'seat comparison test' so can't rightly remember.
The details and side by side photos were posted on ashonbikes back in 2010.
They may still be on the thread (be warned its a monster long thread).

I did ride a 2013 bike a couple of months back and experienced lots of seat vibes and a numb bum quite quickly.
One of my mates was also saying he experieinced vibes through the seat when he test rode a standard 13 touring.
I Don't get any of that on my bike.

I was surprised they werent gel seats when I got mine, as that is what the DP touring seat on the ST4S had.
One of the side effects of a gel seat during hot summers is the seat gets almost too hot to sit on as it cooks in the sun.
For me its a benefit that its not gel

  7. John, you're a legend mate.

Thanks for all the input, I might stick with them then. Guess I will find out on Saturday!

  8. MRA screen is better than standard, but still doesn't solve the problem, which is the wind coming off the beak and under/around the lower sides of the screen - HISS wings do a lot to sort this out, but there's still a difference between this setup and the 2013 model which has far better protection.

  9. no problem, hope its good weather for you when you pick it up
Can't wait to hear of your impressions, and of course a trip report from scotland :upyeah:

  10. What other options are there to come close to the 2013 screen? Surely there must be an aftermarket one that mimics it?

I was bouncing off walls from excitement after the test rides, so no doubt I will be shitting rainbows and pissing happiness by the time I get home haha.

  11. I did 2,500 miles in 9 days (one up) this summer in the Alps using the standard seats and they were totally comfortable. I think the Ducati option seats look a little nicer but IMO there is no comfort related reason to change them. None.
Infact the whole bike was comfortable.

  12. If you want to sell the top box then let me know.

  13. Will do mate. Chances are I will keep it simply so I have it if needs be.

  14. Donald, I'm sure your right, and know a number of my mates use the standard seats.

I'm not saying the standard seats are bad, just for me the comfort touring seats are better.
And for the wife there is no comparison, the comfort pillion seat is miles better.
Sure they were pricey, but if Freshage already has them thats not an issue

  15. yep standard on my bike, have got a lower one, but find it spreads my legs more than the standard, screen wise there are many options, and everyones opinion is different, were not all the same height and shape, I use the touring screen, and Aztec spacers, its made a good improvement but not 100%, keep the top ox, your other half will love it, and you will have assurance she isn't going to get launched off the back, you can also fit 2 helmets.

  16. i find top box a way more usefull than the panniers! Also your missus will love it!

  17. It does n'half look ugly when just the top box though haha.

  18. you'll be on the bike riding though, so who cares

We always used to use the panniers on our ST4S, and only had a top box for a short while as it made the bike a handful at speed (it was too far back off the rear ofthe bike).
On the MTS though its quite far forward, and I can't really notice whether its fitted or not.
If you don't like it, when you stopto take pictures take it off first

  19. Oh, question about it actually, the bracket mount for the top box, is that there normally or only if you buy the top box?

  20. Only if you buy the top box.
withlut it, the handles are still there, plus a small V bit at the back.
ylu can get a rack instead of the top box mount that bus to the same fixings.
