I was trying get a fairing bolt off today (first time on my new to me used 848). One of the buggers has rounded and my Allen key cant get a purchase on it. I tried hammering in a torx driver but it is not working as the fairing flexes. Does anyone have any ideas on what i can do to get it out? I have a spare bolt to replace it with.
What is on the other end of it? (I don't know how the 848 fairing is fixed)......if it is a wellnut (rubber with a brass nut encased in the rubber) you may be able to turn it if you can get at it. You could try an Imperial size bit that is slightly larger than the metric one, or jamming a sharp screwdriver in the socket........
Where abouts is the bolt? if its a bolt in the middle section, you can undo the ones at the top near the nose fairing and the three under the bellypan then you can have a go at the stuck one with the fairing off. I know it sounds daft but if its the first time you've taken the fairing off... you will probably find that the bolt has been cross threaded into the well nut so even if you got purchase it may just turn, you will learn to be very careful not to cross thread the bolts as its usually the last one you do up and you have to take all the others out again.
Ok so half way down about shin high and not the recessed 3mm hex bolt? also not underneath? (dont know how to post pics) http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gallery B/Ducati 848 1.jpg The four that are in the red section just above the black?
