Hey everyone! I've had my 999 for about 2 years now and during the first winter I was blessed with a charged battery. That was not the case this year so I set about charging it, which requires fairing removal. I did this for the first time on the 999 and... failed. According to the manual there are 5 screws: 2 quickies on top, one allen screw at the front, one allen near the side-stand and one underneath the bike holding the left and right part of the fairings together. I loosened them all, but the the front part did not move. The screw is out, but I can't detach the side fairings in that section. I tried wriggling a bit, but it didn't seem to work. Of course I thought all skill had finally left me, so I removed the fairings of my 916 to recharge that one and... it was a piece of cake. Can you give me some piece of advice what I'm doing wrong here?
There is a bayonet fitting into a rubber grommet as well as the quick turn Allen head where the fairing meets the nose cone. Takes a bit of a yank to get it out. Before reassembly grease the rubber grommet up with some Vaseline.
Thank you! Once that is done, is it possible to remove the fairing alone when the bike is on the sidestand? I would normally have to pull it over the sidestand. Would it work to leave it and just lay the fairing down on a blanket or something (still not detached from sidestand)?
It can be done on the sidestand but you need either an assistant or something soft to lay the fairing on. You can then manoeuvre the sidestand out of the fairing. Better to use a paddock stand as previously suggested.
Just pull that fairing front bayonet out square from the bike, don't twist or bend the fairing as it will snap faster than you can say "f*ck!"
