I went to Donington for a bit earlier today to visit a friend who was at a track day. Whilst there the bike next to him was an 1199 Panigale, very nice looking btw! During one of the sessions, the left hand side fairing panels, upper and lower, tore off somewhere on the track. I actually saw one of the panels fly off 3/4 of the way up pit straight and rest itself on the track. They had the yellow lights up to warn people of the debris but I hated to think what would've happened had someone hit it at pit straight speeds. Was it anyone on here? Any more info as to how/why it happened? Anyone heard of something similar on Panigales? The fairings looked stock. I guess if it's not common then maybe some of the bolts had successively worked themselves loose and the remaining bolts couldn't hold the fairing on? Thinking about it now I've had a few fairing bolts go missing! Reminder to all, check your fairing bolts!
It's a struggle to get my fairing panels off when it's sat in the garage because it's so tight a fit. How they can detach themselves is beyond me.
there was a helmet on a panigale decide to run me onto the grass while i was passing him coming out of the old hairpin then decided to slam his anchors on in front of me. as i was on the grass/paint i couldn't brake so did well to avoid hm. some pretty shocking riding out there today.
as it happens he was looking in his mirrors at the time... it was the strangest bit of riding I've ever seen.
I did yeah. I was furious to be honest. Basically said he didn't see me and didn't do it on purpose so what's the problem? I heard a similar excuse before when a car wiped me out and splatter me across the road... He definitely saw me as I could see him staring in his mirrors. BasicLly he panicked and just swerved all over the track and then slammed the brake on. I also asked if he felt me rub his back tyre with my front... 'oh is that what that was? Thought I felt something!'
You are approaching from behind. It's not his fault: it's yours. The rule of the track my friend Unless they overtake you then crash, causing you to crash to avoid them. That is deco their fault Or if they pass you then swing in front of you as you are about to get onto line. That's definitely their fault too
I was alongside passing him and he ran me onto the grass and when I rejoined he slammed the brake on. It was his fault.
it still amazes me that the track day orginizers still allow people out with there mirrors on!! or at least not taped up!! there were loads on the ducati day looking behind them and not where there going makes me mad!!!
Tbh my first trip out in fast group on a multi I had mirrors on and used them. Well for 2 sessions anyway
Hey Sonic, that was me! (the one who lost his fairing, not the one involved in an incident. I don't have mirrors) I can tell you all the fairing was on solid, no bolts loose or missing, and were all left behind on the bike! It was flipping' windy. Must be a design flaw. Just ordered a new set. Just glad the fairing ended up out the way off track and didn't cause a problem. The yellow lights were for something else right on the corner. My fairing was well out the way and on the grass.
Hi Jimbo! Yes it was extremely windy but damn I didn't think it would cause that!! Must've been a manufacturing defect or something in that case! Hope you get it sorted soon mate!
Was it a stock fairing @jimbo2017 ? There's so many bolts on stock fairings I can't see how they could fly off. it takes ages using an allen key!
Scary eh? On the 1199 lowers, if I remember right (bike's away at the mo) there's a bolt at the front, right underneath at the front of the bike. To secure the 2 lowers, it relies on going through an extended lug, about the size of a 1p piece which is an extension of one of the 2 lower panels. That lug kind of locks into a mating moulding on the other lower. If that lug snaps, and it's really easy to achieve that (been there), then I think the only thing holding the lowers in place at the front of the bike is the pressure of a small screw. I'm pretty sure from memory the lowers only clip in place below the radiator. Granted, there's a screw further along underneath on either side but, if the lowers separated at the front..... Could be a good place to start investigating what happened?
