false neutrals

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Richie Rich, Jun 23, 2013.

  1. Since getting my 848 new in September and I have been experiencing false neutrals mainly in 3rd to 4th, sometimes not moving out of 3rd but staying in gear and 5th into 6th,
At the 1st service it was reported and was told it would be due to the gearbox bedding in after a couple of thousand miles a gearbox was still the same so I had the gear lever lowered to see if this would cure the problem which it didn't so on Friday afternoon i drop my bike off at woods for investigation work to be carried out inside the box,
I must say that in my experience Woods are the best dealers around my area always willing to help and return my phone calls unlike the Manchester lot!! and even gets a courtesy bike to take home

It's booked in for three hours investigation work where tolerances and the gear selector will be checked, i'll know more on Monday afternoon hopefully and will report back,

  2. I've never had a false neutral yet. Maybe I'm a tad firmer in booting it in gear.

Ps......why have you posted a pic of a Triumph?

  3. Hes showing off his courtesy bike.

  4. Not just me their mechanic came up with the same of conclusions!

  5. I had this issue too, but it's way better now I've lowered the lever. I still get the odd one but it's definitely rider error when it happens now. I rode 450 miles in 24hrs (mostly scratching and then 130 miles motorway) but I got 2 the whole time and it was when I fluffed it totally. Otherwise it was flawless.

I was really surprised just how much I had to lower the lever.

Is it only when you are using the Quickshifter? I've only ever had one using the QS, never ever if I clutch it.

    Just to add...

The suspension guy (who is a good level racer) rode mine on Friday for 15 mins or so of scratching to test it out after the setup and never mentioned a word about the gearbox. He was very quick to criticise a number of other things about the bike's setup so I know for certain he'd have said if I had a gearbox issue.

Will be interested to see what they say about yours. How much did you lower the lever by?

  6. I've had a few from 5th to 6th, with the quick shifter. I don't recall any when using the clutch. I'm not sure if its just through not giving it a firm enough movement though. I've lowered the shift lever quite a lot too.

  7. Mainly using the QS but also using the clutch and i think the lever was moved by about 10mm which to me feels wrong going down the box

  8. Also had a few between 5th and 6th on my SF848 (with DQS).

  9. Picked up my bike this morning after it been in the workshop and seems to be a lot better, they never went inside the gearbox just adjusted the gear lever down more which I have a feeling they went the wrong way last time! but can be sure they also adjusted the chain and the free play in the throttle,I haven't been out for a proper ride yet so only time will tell.
Whilst it was then I got them to change the front sprocket to a 14T I was a bit sceptical about swapping them over but all I can say is OMG!! that makes a whole lot of difference for the better, I was hoping that it would of slowed me down a bit but it's not working seem to be going quicker!!

  10. One thing I did notice that I've never done before is when you are in 6th gear and trying flicking the lever up you can feel the engine cutting out for a split second

  11. I have them clutchless changing (no QS fitted) ormally 5-6th when on full chat/track. Used to get more when I had road linkage on there, but none other than these since I fitted direct gear change. Very occasionally, I'll get a 3-4th crunch when pootling around but that coz I'm not concentrating and just dab rather than press the lever

  12. Your issue sounds almost exactly the same as mine.

Lower gear lever, remove throttle play, keep a close eye on the chain tension, firm boot... all these seem to contribute to sorting the false neutral issue. Mine is miles better now that it was before I adjusted all these things.

14 tooth sprocket is great isn't it?!

  13. I'm going to have to go for a 14 tooth on the front.....which did you guys go for? I can't seem to find the right part anywhere.

  14. It's just a Renthal one mate.

I bought mine at Ducati Glasgow but you'll be able to get it in a few places. Try B&C Express (phone them as I can't get the website to play ball). Or here's one on eBay.

  15. eBay I got mine

  16. Same as bradders, I get the, from 5th to 6th, but only on track, or accelerating hard.

  17. Hi rich, I have the same bike 2012/2013 evo corse. Have exactly the same issues. Not only was I finding false neutral but it was also dropping out of gear, namely 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Taken it back to Riders to be looked at under warranty when was in for its first service as wasn't happy. I've had 2 848's prior to this; the 848, then the evo and now the corse. Never had the same problem on the previous bikes, well I did have the odd neutral but then not to this extent.

Riders basically didn't find anything wrong but did suggest the turning the DQS off on startup and that should help which it has but then I'm still not overly convinced..

  18. So far all is well done about 250 miles and no false neutrals the lever is set about 70mm down from the foot peg maybe a bit to low but all is well up and down the box using the QS or not, putting the 14T sprocket on you can really ping it up the box bloody quick!!
Maybe take it to woods motorcycles in abergele always see me right
