My 999s has 15 front and 40 rear (original is 15/36) and I have some issues with too low revs on the (smaller) tracks that I mostly drive resulting in some shuddering and delay in the start of the straight. I'm wondering if I just need to put it down one gear but that would leave me in 2. and 3. gear on most of the track apart from the short straight that takes me to 4. What are you using? tnx Jim
If that's all the gears you're using, i'd put a 14T on the front. Would give you a fair few more revs for the same gear/speed. Or, as andyb said, get it into first if you need it. You would on the road so why not on track? I've got a couple of chains and a few sprockets to cope with shorter and faster tracks and make the most of the limited power.
True - I just need to get down a gear, maybe even into first gear in the really-slow hairpin corner. As you can see I'm not really using the revs properly - yet! Knutstorp EMSE blå gruppe 2013 06 07 første pas - YouTube br Jim
But you've gone up 4 on the rear already, you should be almost topping out everywhere. Add 1 down and it will be like a motox bike! Lol Cant imagine many places where first would be needed. Watching first few moments of your vid, not sure where the rev counter goes, but looks like you barely get above 5k revs. Think you need to keep it above that level all the time
You need to open the throttle. The bike is on tick-over everywhere. No point in reducing the gearing any further if you are not using the gearbox to give you optimum torque out of the corners. Getting some more experience with an instructor should see you improve dramatically.
Seems a bit crazy going up 4 on the back and leaving the front alone 14/36 is very close to your 15/40 and you would probably get away without adjusting the chain. Did u need an extra link
Wow , slow riders are so unpredictable , I've only ever done one trackday , simply due to living here on this island, so I compete in hillclimbs and time trials. My one trackday was Brands indy in the inters group, they were so unpredictable it was dangerous, I think I then became the dangerous one because I was frustrated being stuck behind em. I ended up overtaking, undertaking and finally taking 4 riders around the outside only for them to run wider and wider and me run out of track. Seems flippen safer competing on my own.
It can be really frustrating, but its about planning; if you are one of the quickest in your group, get out at the front so you get a couple of laps before you come across the pack and they will have sorted themselves a little given they have also done a couple of laps. Or go in experienced. Although Brands is a tough one as its so short. Fast inters will be doing a minute or just under, experienced low 50's as will some of the inters, doesnt take lomgwith 40 on track to catch the ones doing 1'10 + laps
peter james, sensible thing for you would be move in to the fast group. Safer for everyone then. And remember, it's a track day, not a race. If you need to wait to pass safely then that's what you should be doing.
True - in this group I was one of the slow dudes and now I'm between the 3-4 fastest and learning to overtake safely, which has taken me some trackdays to learn. Within the next 3-4 trackdays I will probably need to move up to the faster boys and experience from others show that moving one class up will do nice things to your laptimes and to the safety on the track. Jim
overtaking was always the hardest thing to do/learn for me, and still I hestitate too much on trackdays. Test days and racing, not a problem, even if only a second a lap quicker if I catch someone its straight past. But a TD is just that; last thing anyone wants is some wannabbee frustrated to$$er passing too close and making you crash. I'd rather not be that to$$er.....unless its done to me then gloves off and if you're on the grass, you're on the grass
